Son Volt Honky Tonk album cover Jay Farrar brought his playing mates of Son Volt back together for a familiar yet fresh twist on the alt-country sounds of today.

Farrar was a co-founder of the band Uncle Tupelo with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy back in the day, way back in the day. The two eventually agreed to disagree and went their own separate way with Uncle Tupelo still being cited as pioneers of the modern alt-country sounds.
Appropriately enough, Son Volt’s sixth studio album is called ‘Honky Tonk’ and delves lyrically into his observations on the road of the American landscape. Sonically, the old school honky tonk with pedal steel and violin sounds are incorporated, with some slight variations, very slight.
The first single, Hearts and Minds, is a lush waltzy number spiced up with some cajunesque instrumentation. The album is reminiscent of the childhood music my Daddy listened to constantly; Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, and the rest of those vicars of the Grand Ol’ Opry in the 60’s and 70’s, whose words spoke of heartbreak and life, while providing fans a reason to dance.

“though are heart and minds don’t waver, waiting for love, that side of danger”

Honky Tonk will be available worldwide via Rounder Records March 13.
