In 1958…Elvis Presley got his U-S Army orders to report for duty. He was allowed a 60-day deferment so he could finish the film King Creole.
In 1965…The Rolling Stones appeared on the season premiere of Shindig! They invited Howlin’ Wolf to be their guest on the show, then sat at his feet while the bluesman performed. Also appearing on the show were The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, Petula Clark, Bobby Vee, Bobby Sherman and Gerry & the Pacemakers.

In 1968…Having been in seclusion since his 1966 motorcycle accident, Bob Dylan tried to rebuild bridges with the folk community he left behind after going electric. He and The Band performed on a bill with Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, Richie Havens and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot at a Carnegie Hall tribute to Woody Guthrie, who passed away in October 1967.

In 1969…Elvis Presley recorded “In the Ghetto” and Suspicious Minds.” It was the first time he had recorded in Memphis since 1956.Meet_the_BeatlesIn 1964…The album Meet the Beatles was released in the U-S on Capitol Records. It was their U-S debut LP.

In 1970…John Lennon and Yoko Ono both cut their hair off in Denmark and declared it to be “Year One.”

In 1973…Jerry Lee Lewis made his debut at The Grand Ole Opry.

In 1974…Stevie Wonder played his first show after an auto accident five months earlier.

In 1977…British DJ John Peel played Pink Floyd’s Animals on air for the first time.

In 1982…Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off of a bat in Des Moines, Iowa and was hospitalized and forced to take a series of rabies shots. Osbourne says he thought it was a toy/fake bat.

In 1986…Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan performed at a Martin Luther King Day concert in Washington, D.C.

In 1988…The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Drifters, Berry Gordy, Jr., The Supremes, Les Paul, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. Beach Boys singer Mike Love gave a rambling speech in which he insulted Paul McCartney, Diana Ross,Bruce Springsteen and even Mick Jagger. Paul McCartney himself did not attend, refusing to play with George Harrison or Ringo Starr due to business differences.

In 1999…While on probation for a 1997 heroin conviction, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots was arrested for failing to provide a urine sample to his live-in drug treatment center.
