$1,000 Grants available for commuity organizations, schools to help fight childhood obesity

UnitedHealth Group is partnering for a third year with the nonprofit Youth Service America (YSA) in a campaign to give children the opportunity to learn about childhood obesity and become “Health Care Heroes.”  Schools, youth-focused, community center-based programs are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $1,000 to create specific campaigns relevant to their own community. To obtain an application, go online to www.YSA.org/HEROES.

hildhood obesity is one of the greatest health issues facing children and youth in the United States today.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three children is obese or overweight, putting them on the road to lifelong chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.  If left unchecked or untreated, obesity will affect 43 percent of adults by 2018, according to the 2009 America’s Health Rankings™.

Applications are due before midnight Friday, October 22, 2010.  Grant recipients will be notified in December 2010 and January 2011.
