So Beautiful or So What

To celebrate the release of his first new record in five years, legendary artist Paul Simon has announced a very special North American tour beginning Friday, April 15th in Seattle, Washington. The set list will draw from his iconic career, including several songs that haven’t been performed live in many years. Also included will be songs from So Beautiful or So What, his brand new album set for release by Hear Music/Concord Music Group on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Before hitting the road, Simon will appear two consecutive nights, April 6th and 7th on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Produced by Phil Ramone and Paul Simon, with liner notes written by Elvis Costello, So Beautiful or So What is one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year. Rolling Stone magazine recently declared it, “His best since Graceland,” and National Public Radio affirmed, “…his new music balances great poetry and pop. Paul Simon is a national treasure.” In their current issue, Filter Magazine calls the new album, “…a new masterpiece from the Picasso of music.”

Joining Paul for this tour is a stellar band of musicians including Cameroonian guitarist Vincent Nguini, drummer Jim Oblon, pianist Mick Rossi, saxophonist/keyboardist Andrew Snitzer, bassist Bakithi Kumalo, guitarist Mark Stewart, master percussionist Jamey Haddad and multi-instrumentalist Tony Cedras.

  1. Best album of 2011 so far!

  2. I prefer Simon’s solo albums. I like duet period but I prefer the music he made after the split up.

This one seems to me good, so good. I’ll try to go to one of his concerts. I suppose he shall not come to Spain

    Thank you for the links

  3. Sounds absolutely wonderful!

  4. I honestly didn’t know how he’d follow up the brilliant “Surprise”, but having heard “So Beautiful Or So What” all the way through now, many times (thanks to ZEW!!), I honestly can’t imagine a better album being released this decade unless it’s by Paul Simon. For the sixth decade in a row, he has released another album that is not just an absolute pinnacle of his career, but also as great a work as the decade will likely see .”Bookends” was as great an album as was released in the 60’s. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was the same thing for the 70’s. “Hearts & Bones” and “Graceland” were as great as anything ever put out in the 80’s. I’d say “Rhythm Of The Saints” was the best of the 90’s, and “Surprise” was certainly my favorite album of the first decade of this 21st Century. Thanks Paul, & Blessings Of Love & Light To You & Yours!! See you in Toronto & Boston, now I’m happy to say, twice each in each town (as long as I can get tickets again this weekend).

  5. So, so Beautiful. My order is in. I love Dazzling Blue.

  6. There is so much listening to be done with this album, and I can’t wait to spend quality time with it. As always, Paul Simon’s songs make me think. Heck, I am still thinking about the songs he wrote in the ’60s – what an amazing catalogue this man has.

  7. So beautifull!!

  8. Sounding wonderful, but the last two songs don’t work I’m afraid. Any chance you could fix them?

    Thanks for this awesome preview!

  9. Thanks for this, however the last two songs don’t work!

  10. Hi

The last 2 songs are not playing…can you check that?

  11. Vocally Paul Simon sounds a little older but basically the same as he did 40 years ago.

The second thing I noticed was, This reminds me of the albums Graceland and Rhythm of The Saints
in that, They are typical gorgeous Simon melodies and lyrics…typical Simon songs.. on top of backing
tracks with hip third world rhythms.. ecclectic instrumentation (Zithers) weird synth sounds… so yeah
When I first heard Graceland… I thought… He is doing his folky/pop/jazzy songwriting on top of these
new rhythms… this time there are some brittle and strange arrangements, instrumentation and sounds.

Third thing I noticed after a cursory listen,,,Wow this is his best work in around 20-25 years..great tunes
would have been nice to have that fantasy fulfilled of A Simon and Artie duet on one song.. or one upbeat rock song
to lift the energy a litte… But the man can’t be all things to all people.. fine fine album, best in decades.. best thing since Graceland.

Paul Simon is an American Icon, one of our greatest songwriters, recording artists ever.. So nice to have him back with a really good album.. and amazingly, his voice sounds great,

Did I like this as much as Sounds of Silence or Mrs Robinson… probably not. but I did like it as much as Graceland more or less… hard to say without a few years to mellow with it… Great job Mr. S

    thanks !

  12. “Love Is Eternal Sacred Light” & “Dazzling Blue” may be my two faves right now!! Holy crap this run of “Surprise” & “So Beautiful Or So What” is up there with his “Hearts & Bones”, “Graceland”, “Rhythm Of The Saints” run (or his “Bookends” & “Bridge Over Troubled Water” run for that matter). I can’t wait to see him live in Toronto & Boston! I am beyond blown away!! What an incredible album!!

  13. Seems that the last two link don’t work (yet)?

  14. Hey Gang: Nice try, but tracks 9 & 10 don’t work!! Please fix ASAP!!
