Hangout Festival headliners, the Foo Fighters played an 111-minute set for Live on Letterman at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre, honoring the Beatles by mimicking the look of the Fab Four’s iconic debut U.S. performance in 1964 on the same stage. But this was no “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”
The Foos bashed out the 11 uranium-heavy tracks from their just-released album, Wasting Light, from opener “Bridge Burning” to closer “Walk,” while visually aping the Beatles set: Black suits? Check. Retro bass drum art? Check. Filmed in back and white? Yep. Stage decked out with art deco designs circa 1964? You betcha.
“I don’t know how the Beatles did it ’cause these [suits] are hot,” said frontman Dave Grohl, who in the early-90s played in an all-star Beatles cover band with members of Sonic Youth, Afghan Whigs, and Soul Asylum. “Especially when you’re playing something like this!” Then the Foos kicked into a heavy set of oldies, including “All My Life,” “Hero,” “Stacked Actors,” “Monkey Wrench,” and “Everlong.”
