The next two weeks will offer a variety of choices for entertainment in around the Port City, and the ZEW is making it easier on pocketbooks with several free shows of up and coming artists.
Milo Greene from Los Angeles to play 92ZEW free concert series Oct. 15. But don’t ask which one is Milo.
Monday, October 15
Alabama Music Box
First up in the series is the Los Angeles quintent Milo Greene, who reportedly got standing ovations while touring with the Civil Wars and earned ‘new artist to watch’ accolades from the likes of Esquire magazine. But don’t ask which one is Milo because in the vein of Remy Zero and the Freddy Jones band, no one is. Robbie Arnett tells NPR he and college mate Andrew Heringer created the character Milo Greene as a booking agent, so they would sound more professional to get gigs. The charade worked as they got more and more bookings into better venues. Later on down the road, Arnett and Heringer would come together with three others to create a new band, they decided to name in honor of their ‘booking agent.’
Milo Greene is comprised of Robbie Arnett, Graham Fink, Andrew Heringer, and Marlana Sheetz who all handle lead vocals and all play various instruments, switching around during their performances. Providing percussion and beats is Curtis Marrera.
Check out their new tune below and head on down to the Free Show October 15 at the Alabama Music Box.
The Dunwells, Meiko and Martin Harley
Tuesday, October 16
Alabama Music Box
The Dunwells are England’s latest organicly electric folk/britrock export. With eloquent harmonies and haunting melodies they are sure to delight Mobile music fans. They’ve already appeared on Letterman, Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza stages within just two years of their formation in Leeds, England.
The band is a family band with brothers Joseph and David Dunwell, cousins Jonny Lamb and Rob Clayton and longtime best friend Dave Hansen. 92ZEW is currently spinning their single ‘I Could be a King’.
Meiko, who has also been to Mobile before with the ZEW Krewe’s Holiday Jam at the Saenger Theatre, is opening the show in support of her latest effort ‘The Bright Side’. Longtime ZEW listeners may remember her at the Holiday jam, she sang the song about the boyfriend that’s just a friend (but his girlfriend wouldn’t understand). A Southern girl in every sense of the word, Meiko was born and raised in Roberta, GA and her first gig was singing White Christmas for parishners in her Southern Baptist Church. She enjoyed it so much, she continued to sing anywhere and everywhere she could thereafter. Then made the leap to Los Angeles, signed to Myspace records that led to another record deal with Fantasy/Concord Records.
About the Dunwells
Delta Rae and Erin McCarley
Thursday, October 25
Delta Rae was just featured in Rolling Stone Magazine‘s Women who Rock feature and are apparently wowing crowds, music movers and shakers, and fans of live music with their electric live performance. They say the guys & gals are real nice too. Rolling Stone writes: “Delta Rae are the pride of Durham, North Carolina. The six-person unit—three siblings: Brittany, Ian and Eric Hölljes, along with Elizabeth Hopkins, Mike McKee and Grant Emerson—create a sound rich in Carolina soul with hypnotizing four-part boy-girl harmonies.”
Opening the show is no stranger to dedicated ZEW listeners, Erin McCarley. Erin was in town a couple years ago for the 92ZEW Holiday Jam at the Saenger theater. Erin hails from Garland TX but honed her tunesmith chops in San Diego and now calls home in, yep, you guessed it, Nashville. Fans of Ingrid Michaelson, Sarah Barreiles et al will feel at home with Erin. Probably won’t be long now before she’s a big star too, seein’ as how the snarky celeb gossip blogger (now turned music critic?) Perez Hilton has been raving about McCarley.
