Bob Dylan is the first rock artist voted into the elite American Academy of Arts and Letters.
According to executive director Virginia Dajani, officials couldn’t decide whether he belonged for his words or for his music, so they settled on making him an honorary member. “The board of directors considered the diversity of his work and acknowledged his iconic place in the American culture,” Dajani said, according to BIllboard.com. “Bob Dylan is a multi-talented artist whose work so thoroughly crosses several disciplines that it defies categorization.” Dylan will be inducted in May…

Original Yes guitarist Peter Banks passes on at the age of 65.
“It’s with great sadness to have to report the death of Peter Banks,” a post on his official site stated. “He died in his London home on March 8, 2013. Thanks for all the music Peter! R.I.P.” Former Yes member Billy Sherwood wrote on Facebook: “Rest In Peace… Peter Banks. Peter very recently played on the new ‘prog collective 2′ project I’m writing/producing, as well as the ‘days between stations’ record I worked on. As a Yes fan, this is sad news indeed. It was an honor to work with Peter on many productions. He will be missed!” Banks was one of the founding members of Yes in 1968, but left the group after playing on their self-titled debut and 1970′s Time and a Word. Prince and Smashing Pumpkins added to SXSW.
It’s official! Prince will perform this Saturday night at music/tech mover and shaker schmoozefest, SXSW. The Purple icon will play La Zona Rosa and festivalgoers can only get into the show via a random drawing through the SXSW website, unless they are a Samsung Galaxy owner, as Samsung is sponsoring the event…

Smashing Pumpkins (or a Smashing Pumpkin considering Billy Corgan is the only original member remaining)  will also rock Austin’s SXSW festival this Saturday, March 16 for Red Bull’s showcase, Sound Select: 120 Hours. Also on the bill are The Sword and Girl in a Coma. The show is in downtown Austin, with the exact location being revealed the morning of the show via the Twitter handle @rbsoundselect. After that, the Pumpkins will kick off a U.S. tour on April 29 in Melbourne, FL.

Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players (the supergroup that includes Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, and many other luminaries) were announced to perform as well with Grohl being this year’s Keynote Speaker.
