Sting has written an article on The Huffington Post, calling for the legalization of marijuana. The singer feels America is wasting money putting pot users in jail when that money can be spent overcoming poverty and stopping global warming. Sting wrote, “The ‘War on Drugs’ has failed but it’s worse than that. It is actively harming our society. Violent crime is thriving in the shadows to which the drug trade has been consigned.” Sting wants people to support the Drug Policy Alliance, which campaigns for those jailed for non-violent drug offenses to be released. Read everything the singer had to say at HuffingtonPost.com. ·

According to ContactMusic.com, a spokesperson for DARE, which teaches kids to stay off drugs, stated, “[Sting] should stick to singing and not meddle in matters he doesn’t understand. We do not need pop stars coming out and making irresponsible statements like that.” ·

Bonner’s Point Public Boat Ramp to Reopen Thursday, April 1

The Bonner’s Point public boat ramp on Lake Jordan in Elmore County will reopen Thursday April 1, after months of renovation work. This project was funded through a Sportfish Restoration Grant, which is supported by excise taxes on fishing equipment and outboard motor fuel. Additional funding was generated through the sale of state fishing licenses.

In August 2009, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) began work on several improvements to the Bonner’s Point. These improvements include: a new 60-foot wide launching slab capable of accommodating up to four boaters at a time, a 40-foot wide entrance road with space for a “make-ready” area, and a new exit road to improve the flow of traffic and alleviate long launch lines that were a common occurrence at this facility in the past.

According to WFF Fisheries Development Coordinator Damon Abernethy, there are more improvements in the works, but none will require the complete closure of the facility.  “This summer two new courtesy piers will be added, the handicapped parking area will be doubled in size, the parking area will be re-striped, and security lighting installed,” Abernethy said. “There is also a proposal to expand the primary parking area by about 40 spaces to accommodate the heavy use this public reservoir receives from anglers and pleasure boaters.”

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. Molly the Owl

March 23rd, 2010

I love owls.  Ever since I was a kid at summer camp when a bunch of us took care of a orphaned baby screech owl,  I have been fascinated by these amazing birds.  And being a nightowl myself it’s only natural…right?

I had Baynard Owls live in my yard in South Carolina and was able to gain their trust enough to get within a few feet of them to take pictures of them. Countless mornings here in Mobile when I leave my house to come to work at the Zew, I’ve heard them in my neighborhood.

Face it…Owls are cool.

So when I saw on the news this morning the story of Molly the owl of course I was intrigued.  Molly is an owl in San Marcos, Ca who made a nest in a barn there and the owners decided to share her story with the world…God Bless the internet. They put a web cam in her box and viewers all over the world can watch her progress.  So far she has laid 6 eggs and one has hatched.  Her hosts have named him Max.  Her mate collects food and brings it to her so she can feed the owlet.

Check it out for yourself…Enjoy

Gene
