Boogie Chillin’ t-shirt & koozie

Boogie Chillin’ reunion show is August 6, 7pm at Veet’s in downtown Mobile. Tickets are $10 and available online

Ben Jernigan checks in with 92ZEW to tell us this year’s Boogie Chillin’ Reunion will offer up t-shirts and koozies to raise funds for a headstone on Hank’s gravesite.

One of Mobile’s most loved and biggest musical influences, Hank Becker, passed away nearly two years ago and is still missed by many Mobile music lovers. Former members of Boogie Chillin’ get together on his birthday to jam for his memory at Veet’s.

This year’s edition is a benefit with specialty t-shirts & koozies.  Jernigan says he recently learned Hank has no headstone, so they’ll be selling a limited number of “Boogie Shirts” and koozies with Becker’s logo. The shirts, koozies, and tickets to the reunion show are being sold online, but to raise more funds, the shirts will be available for pick-up at the show as opposed to shipping.

Jernigan wants to know what you think should be on Becker’s headstone. If you have ideas, post them here.

The Underhill Family Orchestra is a rowdy, warpaint-wearing, arm-swingin’-foot-stompin’ 6-piece Rock-and-Roll//Americana outfit from the Alabama Delta. Since their formation in 2009, these twenty-somethings have produced two albums worth of music and played all over the southeast and the midwest bringing their sound, which mixes gypsy//jazz//folk//spiritual//soul//rock-and-roll and other surprises, to the ears and hearts of thousands of people.”We have spent half a decade making sure that we can book our own tours, make our own merch, be our own PR people and still have fun making music we enjoy.”
As the band makes its march into a new year, they hope to bring an even bigger impact and take their sound, which “will make you want to paint your face, forget your age, and kiss a friend, (Luke Buckley//AL.com, Mobile Press-Register)” and their stage show which “defies convention and takes folk rock to strange and idyllic places. A show you won’t soon forget, (Buckley)” to further heights. They hope to come play in your town so you can join in on the experience that is The Underhill Family Orchestra.

92ZEW FREE SHOW – New Artist Showcase — Tuesday, July 22 – Southern Napa, Daphne
92ZEW presents Max Frost, free show Southern NapaABOUT MAX FROST

There are a few things you should know about musician, producer and songwriter Max Frost. He developed his eclectic style of music playing in various projects throughout his teen years. Max became a musician when he was eight, learning guitar simply because music was always around him and he loved it. He started playing shows at 12 and collaborated with a diverse array of artists like Austin icon Bob Schneider and hip-hop MC/producer Kydd. After hearing musicians like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo in his late teens, Max began incorporating hip-hop elements into his blues-inspired stylings, interested in the idea of combining modern rhythms with classic vintage tones in his music.

In September 2012 Frost decided to leave the University of Texas-Austin, where he was studying English, to pursue his solo career. The musician released a single, “White Lies,” a boisterous number that expresses the feeling of paranoia one finds in a relationship and reflects that aching fear of betrayal, in April 2013. The track hit No. 1 on The Hype Machine?s “Most Popular Tracks on Blogs Now” in April and May, and Max suddenly found himself with a far greater audience than Austin, TX. Max channeled the song?s success into the creation of his debut EP, Low High Low, out in October. For the musician, the EP is an opportunity to showcase the way he pulls in aspects of various styles, from blues to funk to electro to hip-hop to pop, and fuses them together in a new way.

Max Frost

“The songs all connect to polar emotional states in life – highs and lows – giving the EP its name,” Max says. “This basic pattern is reflected in the content of the songs and the moods of the melodies. The theme continues in the production aesthetics of low-fi and high-fi, which will continue as the basic concept in my music into my upcoming LP. I hope the songs give a rounded representation of the music I’ve made in the past as well as a window into what I plan to create for the future. I’m influenced by many genres so I wanted to create an introduction that displayed diversity but also had coherence.”

The music itself, as heard on Low High Low, is dynamic and innovative, a new way of capturing classic sonic ideas. It’s also a way for Max to find peace and meaning in the world, and to channel his own experiences into some relatable. There is distinct sense that the listeners can insert themselves into Max?s songs, which is perhaps the most important thing you should know about him.

“A good song is 95 percent of complete thought,” Max says. “A small part of it should be left vague and incomplete because that’s where a listener projects in their own life and their understanding of how it fits as a whole for them. I want to leave space in my music for the other person to project what they’ve lived. That’s true of my new EP and it will be true of my forthcoming album.”

Tedeschi Trucks Band

Website Facebook Twitter Youtube

Derek Trucks – Guitar
Susan Tedeschi – Guitar & Vocals
Kofi Burbridge – Keyboards & Flute
Tyler Greenwell – Drums & Percussion
J.J. Johnson – Drums & Percussion
Mike Mattison – Harmony Vocals
Mark Rivers – Harmony Vocals
Kebbi Williams – Saxophone
Maurice Brown – Trumpet
Saunders Sermons – Trombone
Tim Lefebvre – Bass Guitar

Some risks are worth taking. When Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi decided three years ago to dispense with their much-loved individual bands and pool their talents, they had no way of knowing what the public reaction might be to the new hybrid. They found out quickly enough when Revelator, Tedeschi Trucks Band’s 2011 studio debut, excited their sizable, devoted fan bases and the movers and shakers of the music industry alike, landing TTB both a Best Blues Album Grammy and a Blues Music Award for Album of the Year. Their live followup, Everybody’s Talkin’—documenting what many were already regarding as one of the most superb concert acts around not even two years into their existence—continued that forward momentum and picked up a Blues Music Award for Best Rock Blues Album (Susan, Derek and TTB itself each took home separate Blues Music Awards in 2012 as well).

Now, with the release of Made Up Mind (Sony Masterworks, August 20, 2013), there isn’t a shred of doubt that Susan Tedeschi, her husband and creative collaborator, Derek Trucks, and their superb bandmates are on to something—something very big.

For Derek and Susan, TTB’s strength in numbers—the band presently comprises 11 members—virtually guaranteed that a wide range of influences would steer the music to new, previously unexplored places. That diversity is evident throughout Made Up Mind. “I felt that with the personnel in this band, it was just a matter of time before all of these ideas started leaking out,” says Trucks. “As things progress, and as the band grows, I think that is inevitable. But we had a lot of confidence that it was going to be really good right out of the gate.”

It took a while for that gate to swing open, but it was worth the wait. Derek and Susan didn’t want to rush into things, and paced themselves until they were certain that each musician they brought into the fold was an equal, someone who would elevate the band to new plateaus musically. Today, as the result of carefully building it from scratch, Tedeschi Trucks Band is nothing less than one big happy family, a traveling roots music circus of sorts, roving from town to town and pulling out all the stops along the way, never knowing just what will be the highlight of tonight’s show or which band member will be the one to shine in the next moment. Each member of TTB is a strong enough force to be a bandleader in his own right, but the chemical reaction that takes place when they all come together results in a mighty sound that’s even greater than the sum of its considerable parts.

Mobile’s own crafter of tunes, Eric Erdman, writes more songs and launches Kickstarter Campaign to fund recording.

Eric Erdman, he writes the songs that make the whole world cry and/or laugh

Eric Erdman apparently rides the river of songs. They flow so quickly, one would think he was writing songs before walking.

Quality tales for a tune are quite elusive, but Eric not only catches them, he molds, moves and bends them into enduring art for the musically minded.   Travelling the world is a great source of stories, and Eric has written more than 20 songs after his travels.

This time, Eric wants to take it to a whole new level by recording in legendary Fame studios, Muscle Shoals to get that gritty old soul sound of so many legendary albums.

As we all know, some major players use that studio so it’s quite costly. So Eric launched a kickstarter campaign to get the funds for proper treatment of his songs.

You can help out by donating, even if it’s just a dollar. His goal is $15K by July 17 and he’s about halfway there at the moment. Let’s get together and help a Mobile Brother of Music out. With his talent, he’s bound to put Mobile somewhere on the musical map.

Here’s the kickstarter page to donate —>Eric Erdman’s New Songs Need some Muscle Shoals On Em

This morning (6/26) we got a sample of Adams’ new material and he’s given us something good. Coincidentally, the song is called “Give Me Something Good.” It is the first single from Ryan’s self-titled album, set for release Sept. 9. We’re not sure if the album includes Ryan’s recent cover of the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance” performed at a recent tech conference.
Adams plans to hit the road in the fall to support the new release.

The rockin’ duo 7Horse liked Gulf Shores so much they put it in a song.

Appearing two times on 92ZEW’s Free Concert Series, and the 2nd time, they surprised fans with a song that has Gulf Shores prominently displayed. At the time they were still working on all the pieces.

Turns out, it’s a real toe-tapper about travelling and the fondness of some places.  Finally we can all hear it. However, it was not included on the new record Songs for a Voodoo Wedding. But you can listen here or maybe hear it on 92.1 FM.

okgo-treadmillsThe Titans of Treadmills, OK Go, are back at it, this time with optical illusionistic new video.

OK Go’s been known to make some outrageously compelling and innovative music videos to their songs, and the video for the brand new song, “The Writing’s on the Wall,” is no exception.  The visual is all about optical illusions.
According to Rolling Stone, the video took three weeks to assemble and 50 takes to get right. It uses mirrors, paint and camera angles to continually trick your eyes. The confusion is meant to symbolize the lyrics, which describe miscommunication in a relationship that’s falling apart.okgo-writing

Stylistically reminiscent of New Order/Joy Division.

The new album, Hungry Ghosts, is out in October.   More info at OKGo.net

If you’ve never seen the treadmills or rube goldberg videos, scroll down to watch

Check out OK Go’s youtube channel for plenty of eye/ear candy.
Here’s the video that made them into music video stars

The witty and brainy outfit came out with this mathematically brilliant Rube Goldberg inspired video a few years later. The timing of the numerous ‘machines’ is impeccable.  At the inaugural Hangout Music Festival, frontman Damian Kulash told us this video was done in one take.  While the final version does have a splice, it’s only because they wanted to incorporate another part of a different take (unfortunately, that’s all he told us as a torrential rain storm distracted us and we were evacuating the grounds when he arrived, lol). Nevertheless, check it out.
Who doesn’t like Rube Goldberg machines?

Foo Fighters agreed to play a show in Richmond, Virginia that was crowd-funded and organized without their knowledge. There was a campaign by local fans to sell tickets to a show that didn’t yet exist, with the hopes the group would see the interest and play their first gig in the city since 1998. Fourteen-hundred tickets sold at 50 bucks each and it worked because the band tweeted at the organizers, “See ya soon… let’s have a good time.” A venue and date has not yet been determined but you can learn more about the successful campaign at FooFightersRichmond.com.

The veteran artists and rising stars named as 13th IMA Winners in more than 80 Album, EP, Song, Music Producer, Music Video and Design categories were winnowed from thousands of submissions from around the globe, and were determined by a panel of influential artists and music industry executives.

Among the noteworthy achievements of the 13th IMA program, Vienna Teng won four categories, the most any artist has received in a given year. The self-proclaimed “chamber folk” artist was honored in the Adult Contemporary Album, A Cappella Song, Social Action Song and Pop Song categories. Mree, who bills herself as an emerging, experimental folk artist, and who is currently entrolled at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, received top honors in the Music Producer category for her sophomore album “Winterwell.” The judges cited the sophisticated soundscapes that cushion the songs among the reasons for honoring the album’s overall production.

12thRadioKnown for championing original work by artists who follow their own muse, The IMAs provides Winners with performance, promotion and distribution opportunities that will place them in front of music supervisors, talent buyers, record label executives, and most importantly, fans worldwide. “While the number of outlets that promote new, independent music continues to grow, audiences that frequent these are splintered and don’t coalesce into a critical influencing group that artists once depended upon to achieve mainstream success,” said Martin Folkman, Executive Director of The Independent Music Awards. “The IMA program goal is to gain exposure for extraordinary self-released and independent label artists and their recent recordings.”

Artistry Has Its Awards For more than a decade artists and labels from around the world have found new fans and prominence through The Independent Music Awards. Produced by Music Resource Group, publisher of the popular industry contact database The Musician’s Atlas, The IMAs uses its unrivaled access to performance, promotion and distribution to connect Winners and Nominees to new audiences and revenue opportunities. The program receives submissions from artists previously on major labels as well as self-released and indie label talent from more than 70 countries on six continents. Submissions for The 13th Annual Independent Music Awards are currently being accepted at www.TheIndependentMusicAwards.com/submit.

Google plans to have its driverless car road-ready in a couple years

Google plans to have its driverless car road-ready in a couple years

Google revealed it plans to build its own self-driving cars from the ground up.

Best of all, there’s more room for texting and/or applying make-up as there’s no steering wheel, accelerator or brakes. But, it does have more sensors in strategic spots than is possible in a regular vehicle. It is also equipped with a big “stop” button. In addition to all this tech, Google’s autonomous car includes internal power steering and power brakes.

So when can we get these easier modes of transportation? Google founder Sergey Brin says, “Within a couple of years, we’ll — if we’ve passed the safety metrics we’ve put in place, which is to be significantly safer than a human driver … have them on the road,” he said.

Jack White calls the new Vinyl record invention the “Ultra EP” on a new promo video.
Jack White's 'Lazaretto' vinyl record will play from the inside outward, has secret tracks under the label and an angel hologram

Jack White’s ‘Lazaretto’ vinyl record will play from the inside outward, has secret tracks under the label and an angel hologram

The record, to be released on White’s own Thirdman Records, will play from the inside outward and is likely the first of its kind with a locked groove on the outer edge that will repeat infinitely. It also boasts a hidden track on each side under the label. One of those tracks plays at 78 RPM and the other at 45 RPM, making this 180-gram vinyl release a three-speed record.

Meanwhile, the first song on Side B has two different intros, an acoustic one and an electric one, and depending on where you drop the needle, you’ll hear one of them.

Even more impressive, in the dead wax area of Side A, from the right angle, you can see a hologram of a spinning angel as the record turns. Pick it up on June 10th and see the official video Jack made showing it off below or at YouTube.com/OfficialTMR.

Ex-R.E.M., Sleater-Kinney, Nirvana, Flipper, Swans, Ministry, Young Fresh Fellows studio session

A new supergroup called super-Earth, featuring R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker, made their live debut in Portland, Oregon last week and now, they’re recording music with a big name.

The guys are in the studio with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic.

Filmmaker Lance Bangs revealed the news by tweeting a photo of the band and Krist, calling it a “studio session.” They’re likely recording the 12 songs the band played live at their recent show but there’s no word on when an album might come out or if Krist will ever perform with the group. Check out the photo at Twitter.com/LanceBangs.

While we’re all prepping for one of the biggest and best weekends at the beach, Gulf Shores City Council will be deciding the fate of Hangout Festival 2016 and beyond.

92ZEW sources say Hangout Festival’s request for an additional four years is up for consideration nextweek and some vocal residents are beginning to sway the vote to make it go away.   An anonymous Gulf Shores resident created an online petition to keep the festival and says the purpose of the petition is to “provide a majority voice for the local Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and surrounding area residents who support this annual event.”

If you’re a South Baldwin resident that wants to see the festival continue and have enjoyed a positive economic impact, then you can ‘sign’ the petition here.  One thousand signatures are needed by May 19.

Note the petition is for South Baldwin residents only, because the council looks to voters in their own district for decisionmaking.

Black Keys' Dan Aurbach as a preacherHangout Festival headliners, The Black Keys, unveiled a new video for ‘Fever’ and as always, the duo’s video is so crafty, the song almost takes on a new meaning. Super-televangelistic-expialodocious.

Guitarist/Vocalist Dan Aurbach takes on the role of Televangelist, one of those TV Preachers who rake in the cash from the believers who believe their donation guarantees a spot in Heaven.
The new album, Turn Blue, will be released a few days before Hangout Festival. It can be pre-ordered if you hit up theblackkeys.com

Grizfolk is playing on the beach with 92ZEW’s Countdown to Hangout Festival Free Concert Series along with Wild Feathers, Shannon LeBrie, and Reach for the Beach challengers, The Mulligan Brothers.

Grizfolk website

from radio station KCRW:

grizfolk“In the case of Grizfolk, founded by Swedish natives Fredrik Eriksson and Sebastian Fritze, and Adam Roth, who has ties to America’s Deep South, the results are less global village, and more pushing the possibilities of pop.

One song in particular stood out to me from their recent standing-room-only, A&R-infested appearances at the Monday night residency I curate called School Night: “The Ripple“, (at press time still in the recording stages), which to me could be a crossover country phenomenon.

To be clear, this idea came about not by a cloying marketing strategy, but by honesty. the songs were traded back and forth while the members were in different parts of the world, finally coming together in Los Angeles to form the band, which is a mesmerizing experience live.

Other tracks are straight up anthems that can easily go the distance. “Vagabonds“, in particular, featuring Nikola Bedingfield (of the UK Bedingfields), is one such case, and already getting serious airplay.”

no-sinner-2-sb1Look for Vancouver based outfit No Sinner at 92ZEW Countdown to Hangout Fest Free Concert Series, opening for 28North
No Sinner, lead by 26-year-old Colleen Rennison is a force of nature, a post modern soul belter and queen of rock, a hard-singing, hard-loving, hard-drinking, hard-working throwback to those her and the guys grew up listening to, including Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Rolling Stones and Diana Ross.

Website

Rennison learned from a cousin that her name was “No Sinner” spelled backwards, is now the singer of a raucous rock band with guitarist Eric Campbell, drummer Ian Browne and rotating bassists Bradley Ferguson and Parker Bossley. Their debut album, Boo Hoo Hoo, includes six tracks from a 2012 EP released on Vancouver indie First Love Records.

Boo Hoo Hoo travels from the juke-joint jump blues of its title track and the Delta swamp of “Runnin’,” with a chugging Creedence beat, to “Love Is Madness” with a Motown bass line and a Dusty Springfield “Spooky” vibe. Other highlights include a cover of Nina Simone’s version of Nat Adderley / Oscar Brown Jr.’s “Work Song”, the soaring, affirmative gospel revival of “Rise Up,” the sensuous plaint of “If Anything” and the feedback-charged “Devil on My Back,” a band composition that features Black Mountain’s Matt Camirand.

No Sinner’s music is about the clash between the sacred and the profane, the preacher and the devil, the sins of Saturday night at the local watering hole being washed away in the redemption of Sunday morning in church; in short, the very contradiction at the heart of rock ’n’ roll.

“It’s a consistent theme in my life to negotiate between being animals and yet righteous,” explains Rennison. “How we need a healthy dose of both good and evil in our lives. Music itself is very much a medium between us and the spiritual world. The things we express in our songs run the gamut from sinful to celestial.”

On returning to her hometown from New York, Vancouver, Colleen started writing with Parker Bossley (formerly of Hot Hot Heat) and joined up with a rotating backing band, for a weekly Thursday night residency at Guilt and Company, a new club in Vancouver’s Gastown district. “I honed my chops, my stage confidence, my style and versatility,” explains Colleen. “I also learned to play with other musicians.”

“Lay down your burdens … And rise up!”

“So much of the music I started listening to as a girl came from churches and gatherings where people congregated and sang their blues away,” she says. “It’s a dirty business loving me / It’s going to be hard sometimes,” she warns on the sultry “If Anything.” “That’s a disclaimer for anyone who wants to get involved with me,” laughs Colleen. “I’m warning you now.”

With her in-your-face stage presence and down-to-earth T-shirt and shorts (“I’d like to think I’m bridging the gap between trash and class,” she says), Rennison is an old soul, wiser than her years might suggest. “I love the idea of these women who very much lived in a man’s world, touring on the road,” she says. “Just the idea of the things these women must have seen, the lives they led and how it came out in the music has always inspired me.

“I’ve always connected with folklore and history, a simpler time of life. Since I was a kid. I’ve always felt a little out of place in the modern world.” You can hear that reverence for the past in Boo Hoo Hoo, along with a desire to drag it kicking and screaming into 2013.

“I just want to play music with people I love and respect” says Colleen. “I want to see the world. People who come to our shows leave happy. And as long as you keep making music that people want to listen to, how could you go wrong? Colossal success would be nice, but right now we’re just concentrating on the quality and, hopefully, the rest will fall into place.”

No Sinner don’t mind you comparing them to other people, but they remain true to their own instincts.“We just write whatever comes to us,” insists Rennison. “We’re fans of a variety of different sounds and kinds of music. We’re inspired that artists like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, early Kings of Leon and Lucinda Williams brought it back to the basics and breathe in new life. Luckily, we’re in between so many styles, we have the liberty to do what we please. We really don’t have a formula. We’re not here to be the next anybody. We’ve got our own mark to make.”

Black Keys at Hangout Festival 2012Hangout Festival headliners, The Black Keys, rolled out the hypnotizing title track off their forthcoming album Turn Blue today via Youtube.

Rolling Stone called it “a slow-burning slice of psychedelia”: “When the music is done and all the lights are low,” sings frontman Dan Auerbach over a breezy electric guitar riff, synth-strings and a rumbling bassline. “I will remember the times when love would really glow.”

Chad Smith not happy about Al Jazeera reports that the CIA allegedly used Red Hot Chili Peppers music to torture prisoners in Guatanamo Bay.

The drummer told TMZ “I’ve heard that they use more… like, hard rock metal. Our music’s positive man, it’s supposed to make people feel good and that’s… it’s very upsetting to me, I don’t like that at all. It’s bulls**t.”
Chad was informed of the news by a TMZ photog who captured his reaction on video.

New tunes spinning on 92ZEW this week. If you’d like to know more about the music, artist, or song, and be part of the music selection committee, get the free 92ZEW app for Android and iPhone (plenty of other cool things on the app too).

Added into rotation this week new music from The Kongos and Hangout Fest 2014 artists, The Avett Brothers, Ingrid Michaelson, Ozomatli and St. Paul & the Broken Bones.

Listen out for the Kongos, my bet is you’ll be hearing their unique blend of rockin’ world music on a Top 40 radio station soon (like at least 80 times a week, lol).  That’s my music prediction of the week.

rock and roll hall of fame Nirvana kinda reunited to play with a slew of chick rockers pretending to be Kurt Cobain.  Kiss didn’t reunite.  Other inductees were Hall & Oates, Peter Gabriel, The E Street Band, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt.

Other Highlights of the Honorary Night:

· British musician and manager Peter Asher honored late Beatles manager Brian Epstein and original Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham with the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers. They become the first managers inducted into the Hall.

Peter Gabriel was inducted by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Martin read a joke “excerpt” from the Bible, that he claimed was from the Book of Genesis (get it?). It told the story of the band and the “Angel Gabriel.” He went on to list off the singer’s accomplishments, saying, “He helped John Cusack get his girlfriend back in the movie Say Anything.” When he accepted the honor, Peter advised up and coming musicians to surround themselves with brilliance. Peter and Chris then together performed “Washing of the Water,” also from Us. Peter went on to do “In Your Eyes” with Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour.

Rage Against the Machine guitarist, Tom Morello, inducted Kiss.

He told the crowd, “Kiss was never a critics’ band, kiss was a people band.” Morello said the criteria for induction should really be impact, influence and awesomeness and explained how Kiss excels at all of those. He listed all the non-original members of the band, who aren’t being inducted, and said they deserved a round of applause. He then brought up what he called Rock and Roll all Nite and Party Every Day Hall of Fame inductees Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. When accepting the honor, Gene stated, “This is a profound moment for all of us,” and he complimented each of his bandmates individually, past and present. Peter spoke about being male breast cancer free and said he’d always be “The Catman” in and out of make-up. Ace said he wrote a speech but said his sunglasses weren’t prescription so he couldn’t read it. He went on to discuss his sobriety and the need to educate people about addiction since they think it has to do with will power. Ace said to them, “Try using will power when you have diarrhea.” Paul used his stage time to say how the people should have more of a say in who gets into the Rock Hall since the people are the ones who buy tickets, not the ones who nominate.

Art Garfunkel inducted Cat Stevens, also known as Yusuf Islam.

In his speech, Yusuf said, “I never thought I’d be on the same stage as Kiss.” He also said the decision to induct him into the Rock Hall was a brave one because he doesn’t drink, he doesn’t throw TVs out windows and the only woman he sleeps with is his wife. He said that because of that, the decision was rock and roll. Cat then performed “Wild World” and “Peace Train.”

The Eagles’ Glenn Frey inducted his former bandleader, Linda Ronstadt,

Carrie Underwood, Emmy Lou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow all performed Ronstadt’s tunes.

Bruce Springsteen inducted The E Street Band

E Street Band get the Award for  Musical Excellence, which used to be called “The Sidemen Category,” but when the E Street members were called sidemen, Bruce said it was a “misnomer if there ever was one.” The Boss spoke about how each original member came to the band and he paid special tribute to late saxophonist Clarence Clemons. He went on to say his one regret of the night is that Clarence and late organist Danny Federici couldn’t be there. Bruce also spoke highly of his bandmate and wife, Patti Scialfa.

About the group as a whole, Bruce stated, “Real bands are made from the neighborhood,” adding, “I told a story with the E Street Band that was and is bigger and better than the story I could’ve told on my own.” Each member of the group then gave a lengthy acceptance speech. Clemons’ widow, Victoria, said in hers, “He was known as the Big Man for many reasons.” The crowd hooted and she bashfully said, “You guys are so bad.” She then played a snippet of him singing that Clarence recorded on his phone while alone in his car. After 40 minutes of speeches, Bruce and the band played, what else, “The E Street Shuffle.” They followed that up with “The River” and “Kitty’s Back.”

Hall & Oates, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction (Andy Kropa/Invision/AP)

The Roots’ Questlove inducted Hall & Oates,

“Underneath it all, they were soul artists” said Questlove.  “Hall and Oates will cure any known illness.” He then referred to the Hall as the Rock and Roll Hall and Oates of Fame. When Daryl Hall and John Oates came up to accept the award, they referenced the long E Street Band speeches saying, “Lucky for you, there’s only two of us.” Daryl went on to say, “Do you know we’re the only homegrown Philadelphia band that’s in the Hall of Fame? I don’t say that because I’m proud of it, I say it because it’s fed up,” and he listed some Philly artists the Hall has overlooked. They then started to play “She’s Gone” but bad feedback made it so that Hall couldn’t hear and he stopped the song. He joked that Springsteen blew out the monitors. They started the tune again with better luck then did “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” and “You Make My Dreams Come True.”

R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe took the stage to induct Nirvana.

In his speech, Stipe said, “Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard.” He went on to say, “The idea of America – that hopeful idea – had been dismantled. But with their music, Nirvana blasted through all that with crystalline, nuclear, rage-infused fury.” Drummer Dave Grohl was the first to speak, thanking the four Nirvana drummers who came before him. He also thanked his mom for letting him “listen to some pretty fd-up st.” Dave went on to tell aspiring musicians not to look at posters of their idols and say, “Fk, I could never do that,” rather to think, “F*k, I’m going to do that.” Bassist Krist Novoselic was next. He wished Kurt was there, calling Cobain an intense artist who really connected with a lot of people. Kurt’s mother then briefly remarked, teary-eyed, “I just miss him so much, he was such an angel.” Then, Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, emotionally said how much she wished Kurt could be there. She hugged his bandmates and added, “Tonight, he would have really appreciated it. I just want to give this to our daughter Francis Bean, who couldn’t be here because she was ill.” The band then performed “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with Joan Jett on vocals, marking the first time they performed the song with a singer since Kurt’s death. Next up, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon took on vocals for “Endless Nameless,” then St. Vincent sang “Lithium” and Lorde performed “All Apologies.”

· Often times there is a jam at the end of the Induction Ceremony and there were rumors that some rockers would play AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” but for one reason or another, the show ended after Nirvana’s set.

Check it out yourself May 31st when it debuts on HBO.
