The first weekend of 92ZEW and Bud Light’s Countdown to Hangout Festival was a little wet, but splendid nonetheless for us true music fans. The Mowgli's 92ZEW Countdown to Hangout Free Concert Series Apr 6 2014 (Michele Stancil, MCSPix),

The Mowgli’s sunshiney attitude and sounds appeared to keep the rain at bay (heavy downpours were predicted, however, the sun arrived and the rain left for a beautiful night of great tunes. Everyone sang along with ‘Say It, Just Say It’ and of course their big hit ‘San Francisco’.  Yep, we were all feelin’ the love, especially when they covered a Hall & Oates’ classic. Too bad I forgot my funky 60′s glasses, striped pants and ruffle shirt.

The band had a little more edge to the indie beach sounds heard on their debut album, which is definitely a better experience than seeing a band that sounds exactly like their album. They brought on the musical feeling of the 60′s Woodstock era (sans the massive crowds rolling in the mud and dancing around bonfires).

In chatting with the So Cal band, they revealed current plans of heading into the studio very soon to record their sophomore album, but are keeping the writing and sound details top secret. They did reveal a timeframe of sometime in the Fall. Katie was looking quite smashing in her 60′s revolutionary outfit too.
Power to the People Mowgli’s.

The bandmembers are: Dave Appelbaum – keyboards and vocals; Colin Louis Dieden – vocals, guitar, percussion; Katie Jayne Earl – vocals and percussion; Josh Hogan – guitar and vocals; Matthew Di Panni- bass guitar and vocals; Spencer Trent – percussion, guitar, melodica, and vocals; Andy Warren – drums, percussion, and vocals

Jack White rolls out his second solo LP, Lazaretto, on June 10 and of course, the crafty vinyl lover reveals the limited edition vinyl will be the most unique Vault project yet for Thirdman Records/Columbia.

Posted by: Lee Ann Camp

Scroll down to watch and listen to the ‘lyric video’

Jack White 'Lazaretto' album cover

Jack White’s second solo album ‘Lazaretto’ is out June 9 with a unique vinyl release as well.

It’s no secret that I’m probably one of the biggest Jack White junkies in the deep South. A lotta south Alabamers became fans after seeing his wickedly out-of-the-box set at Hangout Festival, so I may have lost the title. Nevertheless, I’m happy to report the first sip of Jack’s upcoming new record is as fine as French merlot, with a side of cinnamon bourbon.  Taste it yourself in the ‘lyric’ video below.

Described as “stormy, delicate, dramatic, volatile, scratchy and velveteen,” Lazaretto inhabits an exciting place in White’s expansive discography and is already being hailed as “classic” by the select few who’ve been privy enough to hear it. Experience a first taste of new music from the album and watch the video for the new instrumental album track “High Ball Stepper”.

In celebration of the new album and their 20th Vault package, Third Man has unveiled their most unique Vault package yet.

Jack White live at Hangout Festival 2012

Jack White live at Hangout Festival 2012 (photo by Josh Rhinehart of Music Allies)

The LP for Third Man Records’ Vault package #20 will be the ONLY limited version of Lazaretto to be released. Pressed on split-color blue-and-white vinyl and coupled with exclusive album art, this alternate presentation of the album is both insightful and deserving. Also exclusive to the Vault is a fold-out poster accompanying the album, featuring a classic National Archives photo that serves as a recurrent image throughout the album art.

Unlike the lightning bolt and inverted lightning bolt pressings Third Man did for Jack White’s Blunderbuss, this alternate art and colored vinyl will be the only time ANY variation on Lazaretto will be made. Once subscriptions are closed and records are pressed… that’s it. Don’t sleep. Get in now or regret it later.

The 7-inch includes two early demos of songs that appear on Lazaretto in their completed form. Both “Alone in My Home” and “Entitlement” are solo recordings by Jack White, done while he was in Mexico. Pressed on lustrous blue vinyl and housed in the standard felt-weave, die-cut Third Man Vault 7-inch sleeve, both tracks offer a unique glimpse into the creative process and evolution of a song from it’s original germination to its final delivery.

The bonus item is a lavish 40-page hard bound companion piece book full of lyrics, exclusive musical notations, photos and art from Lazaretto. This is the perfect accompaniment to the listening experience and insight into both the album creation method and some of the inspiration (visual and otherwise) behind it.

In addition to these items, Vault package #20 will also include a linen, letter-pressed postcard with the same eye-popping color separations as evidenced in classic chromatic postcards popular in the first half of the 20th century. Stamps not included.

Subscriptions are open through April 30th, so don’t delay and visit www.thirdmanrecords.com/vault to sign up today.

The only married morning duo in Mobile makes things a little more interesting, especially when disagreements happen.

Tim and Lee Ann Camp (get it ‘TLC in the Morning”)  have both had a life-long passion for music and radio, so it would make perfect sense the two would end up together.  They’ve been married nearly ten years and had their first kiss at Saints game in the New Orleans Superdome (the one where Joe Horn calls his Mom in the endzone).

Tim is originally from Mobile and has lived here  most of his life.  Of course there were the excursions to college, Birmingham, Atlanta, Detroit. But eventually he made his way back to Mobile and is now Operations Manager, co-owner, Director of Programming, Chief (and only) Engineer….. of Sports Radio WNSP and 92ZEW.

  • Joel Madison Blount, Birmingham AL -oel Madison Blount is a songwriter living and breathing in the Magic City.  Blount manipulates air with rhythm and melody.  Reflecting on human experience he writes songs as stories meant to offer Hope and compel us to sing out loud.

Their music integrates multiple genres including Rock, Jazz, Funk, Organic Electronica, and Jam creating a completely original sound. Festival Expressions is best known for their unique songwriting & energetic live performances. Over the years the band has made an effort to perform at as many charity events as possible. Giving back to the community is an important part of the FestEx agenda.Throughout 2012 the band wrote, recorded, and produced their first studio album titled “Festival Expressions.” The album was officially released in January of 2013. As Spring 2014 approaches, the group is set to release their second studio album titled “Conversations.” A release date is yet to be determined.Festival Expressions has opened for Tim Reynolds TR3, JJ Grey & Mofro, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk. • The Mulligan Brothers, Mobile AL - The Mulligan Brothers self-titled debut album begins with a mournful fiddle supported by the steady undercurrent of bass and drums. As Ross Newell begins his haunting tale of forbidden plantation love, it is clear that the song will end in death and heartbreak, but well-written songs don’t need a catchy chorus or a happy ending to win over an audience or to be played over and over.   She was born into subjection. She was born without a say.He was her first and only revelation that she might not die that way.I will love you all the seasons. What you want is what I’ll be.I’ll be your rock, I’ll be your reason.Just set me free. Oh, just set me free.“Cecilia”The Mulligan Brothers, from Mobile and Baton Rouge, is Newell on lead vocals and guitar, Gram Rea on vocals, fiddle, mandolin and harmonica, Greg DeLuca on drums and Ben Leininger on upright suitcase bass (all can sing lead or harmony). Their name represents a second chance for the four musicians who finally found the combination that is right for them. “A Mulligan in golf is a ‘do over’ and that is what this band is for us,” says Rea. “We wanted a chance to figure this out the right way.”Their music crosses borders between folk rock, Americana and country, giving Newell the unhurried space to sing about escaping the miseries of life with a soul that isn’t worth much these days, a woman he loves who calls him by another man’s name, and pleading with God to bring tomorrow to wash away today.

Like the Grateful Dead before them, Phish have established an impressive reputation of tireless touring, dazzling improvisation and innovative rock ‘n’ roll.Phish: Jon Fishman , Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Page McConnell

Assembled at the University of Vermont by guitarists Trey Anastasio III and Jeff Holdsworth in 1983, Phish had ambitious musical intentions from the start. Intent on pursuing a complicated, improvisatory musical style, Holdsworth and Anastasio recruited dextrous freshman drummer Jon Fishman and formally trained bass player Mike Gordon. The band’s first gig took place at an ROTC dance in 1983, though their errant set list and bad wardrobe were quickly replaced by a radio. In 1985, Fishman and Anastasio left UVM for the liberal Goddard College, where they continued their studies and refined their ambitious sound. They continued as a five-piece (with keyboardist Page McConnell) until Holdsworth decided to leave in 1986, leaving a hole that forced the band to search for an alternative sound and vision.

In 1988, Phish released Junta on their own to sell at shows. The next year, they wrote and recorded Lawn Boy for Rough Trade affiliate Absolute A Go Go Records, but Rough Trade went bankrupt and the band couldn’t afford to assume distribution, despite the fact that they were fast gaining a devoted following. In 1991, Phish became the first band without a recording contract ever to sell out two consecutive nights at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. In light of that achievement, Elektra signed the outfit, released their third album, A Picture Of Nectar and reissued their first two. It didn’t take long for the band to develop a reputation similar to the Grateful Dead’s: as a terrific live act, and a mediocre recording band. Appropriately, in 1995, after a few dismal-selling albums, the band came out with A Live One, with songs drawn from the band’s recent tour. During the subsequent tour, the band grossed over $27 million. One date on that tour–Halloween, no less–featured the band playing the entirety of Quadrophenia. (The White Album and Talking Heads’ Remain In Light have also gotten the full Phish treatment at Halloween shows.) Also in 1995, Anastasio released Surrender To The Air, an entirely improvised performance featuring members of Sun Ra’s band and New York guitarist Marc Ribot.

In 1996, Phish finally released a worthwhile album. By all critical counts, Billy Breathes is Phish’s most creatively successful, merging the band’s eclectic influences with accessible pop smarts. The upward trend continued with 1998′s The Story of the Ghost, a fine album consisting largely of songs pieced together from spontaneous studio jams.

Tony’s Blog —- Email Tony

On Air 6-10pm – Host 92NEW  ♦

Tony was born in Green Bay WI & spent the first 15 years of his life in that area. At 17 he moved to Reno NV & lost his mind for about 8 years before making the cross country trek & settling here on the Gulf coast at the age of 25.

For the last 13 years he has had more than a few jobs including Boat Captain in the Gulf, Car Salesman on the Eastern Shore, Hotel Manager in downtown, closer for a finance company & then by chance he fell into a part time job as a board operator here at the ZEW in 2005. Over the next 5 years he learned a little bit of everything here, eventually becoming the Morning ZEW host.

In 2010 he made the decision to disappear into the country for a while, where he helped his family build a farm & raised cattle, as well as building a glass blowing studio for an artist friend. In June of 2013, with his work done & sanity restored, he decided, once again, to return to Mobile. We had an opening here at the ZEW, invited him to return to work here. If asked, he would tell you that the greatest singular joy in his life is kids, including his 15 nieces & nephews & more than anything his 8 year old son. Tony is on the air from 6-10pm weekdays, 6-12pm Sat & is the Host of 92NEW which airs @ 8pm weekdays.

Sons of Fathers (Austin, TX)  follow up their critically acclaimed, self-titled debut with ‘Burning Days,’ helmed by legendary producer Lloyd Maines (Joe Ely, Uncle Tupelo).

sons-of-fathers

The record’s ten tracks find the band’s deep American roots blossoming with vines of sonic Texas power, ragged rock, and punk defiance, all wrapped around the “airtight harmonies” (Austin Chronicle) of frontmen David Beck and Paul Cauthen. Maines put it best when he described the band as “The Everly Brothers meets Neil Young and Merle Haggard and The Clash.” Rolling Stone has already praised the album’s “wide open roots and folk rock,” while CMT described it as “rip-roaring Texas rock studded with gospel-influenced harmonies,” and Paste called it “soulful.”  ACL Festival

. . .

Trends and styles may change in music, but there are just some things that are timeless…like songwriting from the heart with ear-catching melodies and rich harmony vocals. The team of David Beck (a stage name as his real name is David Whitbeck) and Paul Cauthen has created Sons of Fathers, a band with a soaring, original sound that belies their young age. They have been compared to the Avett Brothers, The Byrds, and The Everly Brothers, albeit with an infusion of Texas grease.

Beck and Cauthen came together when each was working on a solo project in San Marcos, Texas. Though the two had met casually, a chance encounter at Thompson’s Island in a park on the Blanco River led them to join forces. Paul remembers, “I was walking in with my guitar and my writing notebook and Dave was walking out with his guitar and book.” As soon as the Texans starting writing and singing together, they realized that they had found something special. “We knocked out an incredible number of songs in two days,” says Paul. Singing together came just as easily. “It’s the weirdest thing. The harmony is the last thing we worry about. We just fall into sockets of harmony naturally,” says Paul. Originally called Beck & Cauthen, the group received a letter from representatives of Beck (the artist who performed ‘Odelay’ and ‘Mellow Gold’). “We had used the phrase ‘Sons of Fathers’ long before we wrote the song and we have changed the band name. It was a sign for us to change the name to something that included the whole band, not just a duo. We are all in this together and we all play a role.”

Augmented with Regan Schmidt on guitar and lap steel, Dan Cohen on guitar and mandolin, and Dees Stribling on drums, the band functions as an organic unit. Sons of Fathers is an especially appropriate name as Beck and Cauthen’s heritage has helped make them who they are. Cauthen, a native of Tyler, Texas, began singing in the church at the age of seven and learning guitar from his grandfather, a preacher. He says, “Granddad was a hell of a musician. He chose the Church of Christ instead of the church of rock and roll. I remember learning to sing harmonies in the bathtub at six years old in Tyler, Texas.” Paul now has a tattoo of his grandfather’s signature on his arm and says that his grandfather influences his sense of spirituality to this day. Beck was raised in San Marcos, Texas, the son of Bill Whitbeck, a respected and renowned touring musician. “It was a different lifestyle for a young son. Dad was always on the road for business. We’ve learned from what our fathers and grandfathers have done and put those lessons into our lives,” he reflects. The catalog they have written displays elements of all their most righteous influences. Be it a country shuffle reminiscent of Robert Earl Keen, an Americana folk song steeped in the lyrical weight of Bob Dylan, or a genre-bending tune recalling the Beatles, Sons of Fathers possess something unique. “Our favorite songwriters are the most timeless ones Dylan, Paul Simon, McCartney, Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. We also love the Texas writers: Robert Earl Keen, Willis Alan Ramsey, Roger Miller,” says Paul.

As they worked up their original compositions, they began to include finely tuned elements from their live show, incorporating tight Everly-esque harmonies and high energy live arrangements. In the spring of 2011, the band ventured into the studio in the hill country town of Doss, Texas. David says, “Being up there focused us and cleared our minds.” Legendary producer Lloyd Maines joined them to co-produce their debut album. “Lloyd put the old soul way of doing things on our record, made sure everything was flowing,” says David.

For a new band, they have accomplished much in a short period of time. Most notably, they made their live radio debut on WXPN’s Free at Noon series in August, 2011, a rare event for a new band without a record out. WXPN’s Bruce Warren said, “Their rich vocal harmonies are nothing short of moving.” They have also played at the legendary Gruene Hall. Radio programmer and media consultant Jessie Scott of Music Fog, who has spent her career bringing great music to audiences around the country; and Marty Schwartz, who knows something about harmonies having begun his career working with the Eagles and Elektra during the recording of ‘Hotel California,’ became involved after they heard startlingly amazing demos. Schwartz also works with McVay Media, a radio consultancy and currently with Gold Mountain Entertainment. Schwartz heard one song, Sons of Fathers’ “Adam & Eve,” and got on the next plane to Austin to see the band in person. Soon, the music of Sons of Fathers will not only be timeless, but a timely reminder of how great music can be.

Press:

“ I have the luxury, upon discovery of any twist or turn in the road, to share something new and exciting – even if I don’t know much about the act or their background. Such is the case today. This is great, great fare – and a relative mystery to me… Paul Cauthen’s granddad, a preacher, taught him to sing and play guitar while Dave Beck earned an upright 1950 Kay bass from his father, a world-traveling Texas musician. The two met when each brought their guitars and writing notebooks to a park in San Marcos, TX, walking to an island by a waterfall, and quickly discovered that their voices fit into incredible natural harmonies. According to the duo’s facebook and twitter pages, they now work and reside in Austin. If the title track is representational of what we can expect, we should all be very excited… Certainly One to Watch! ”

The Black Keys’ sponsorship of Akron Little League team turns into full-fledged fundraiser for the entire league through sales of specially designed baseball jerseys.

Black Keys Little League Jersey

[display_podcast]

via Akron Beacon Journal

Hangout Festival 2014 headliners, The Black Keys, continue giving back to the kids of their hometown in Akron, Ohio.  The specially designed Black Keys baseball jerseys will be sold while on tour and online with all profits for the Black Keys and their record label, Nonesuch Records, going to the thoroughly excited Little League, who have already layed the groundwork for plans of what they’ll do with the money.  Sure beats standing on street corners selling and begging, eh?

Here’s the entire story from the Beacon Journal:

The West Akron Baseball League has friends in rock star places.

Akron’s reigning music royalty, the Black Keys, are continuing their relationship with the Orioles, the baseball team they sponsored in 2013. And as of Monday morning, they will be helping out the entire WABL through sales of specially designed baseball jerseys.

The shirts feature the WABL logo on the front and the Black Keys emblazoned on the back, and were designed by Michael Carney, the band’s creative director and drummer Pat Carney’s brother. They will be available on www.theblackkeys.com Monday morning, and both the band and its label, Nonesuch Records, are donating their cut of the sales directly to the WABL. The idea was floated during the 2013 season but is now coming to fruition, and is poised to be a big money-maker for the league.

“[The Black Keys’] manager said they sell thousands of shirts of each design and they want to make a major push for this to be their top-selling shirt,” WABL board member and vice president of T-ball Steve Milkovich said.

It was Milkovich — a neighbor of the Carney family whose younger brother Nick, now a major in the Army Special Forces, has been friends with Pat Carney since childhood — who first reached out to the band to sponsor a team. The band cut a $300 check and requested their logo be featured on the back of the shirt. When Pat Carney posted a photo on Instagram of the shirt last year, suddenly the Orioles became a trending topic on Yahoo and the photos appeared on TMZ, the Huffington Post and MTV’s website.

“Dan [Auerbach, the Keys’ lead singer and guitarist] and I played little league when we were kids before we got into music,” Carney said in a written statement.

“It was a really positive hobby that kept us from sitting around watching TV. We are proud to be sponsoring WABL to hopefully offset some of the league’s expenses and get more kids outside having fun,” he wrote.

The newly minted shirts had their premiere Saturday night at the WABL Night at the Races Fundraiser in Zwisler Hall at St. Sebastian Church. The event is the league’s biggest fundraiser and the Keys donated about 70 shirts to sell, so local supporters had the opportunity to be among the first in the world to have the specially designed jerseys.

The Black Keys will continue to sponsor the Orioles, who will receive their own jerseys, and beginning Monday morning, fans around the world will be able to help out the local league.

“This is awesome. We have quite a nice little chunk saved up for a local little league team that survives on T-shirt and pizza sales,” Milkovich said. “We’ve been saving for a decade now, but this will double what we have, hopefully.”

He added that “if we’re dreaming,” he hopes the shirt sales will reach six figures, allowing the league to fulfill a long-standing wish of purchasing its own baseball complex.

“We’re so pumped,” Milkovich said. Along with his son, he got to hang out a bit with his former neighbor and rock star benefactor while Carney was visiting last summer during a band break.

“We have no idea what this could be. But we’ve been saving to buy our own fields coming up, and there is going to be a Black Keys Fields without a doubt.”

Paul Lamere at MusicMachinery.com took on the extraordinary task that explores locations and distinct music preferences, with results that might surprise you.
Distinctive artists by state (musicmachinery.com)

Distinctive artists by state (musicmachinery.com)

Lamere says he sampled listening preferences of about a quarter million listeners that have a zip code associated with their streaming music account.  Listener data is drawn from a variety of music streaming services that are powered by The Echo Nest.

He aggregated the listeners into regions (state, regional and all-US) and compared regions by looking at the top-N most popular artists based on listener plays in each region.  He then sought the artists that have a substantial change in rank between regions. These artists are the artists that define the taste for the region.

For more in-depth analysis and comparisons, see Lamere’s original post at MusicMachinery.com.

Imagine Dragons Breaking Records

imagine-dragonsCongratulations Imagine Dragons, who made music history. Their now hit song, “Radioactive,” is in its 77th week on the Billboard Hot 100, a new record for longest run on that chart.

The band also scored Platinum sales for the single “It’s Time.”

It knocks Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours,” which logged 76 weeks a few years ago.

Led Zeppelin frontman  tells Uncut magazine the band’s been in the studio and have nine tracks already.  The record is being made like Led Zeppelin II, was “created entirely on the road,” because they’ve been “going into the studio with little filigrees of ideas that have popped up” during their tour.

Sensational Space Shifters is made up of Plant’s pre-Band of Joy group, Strange Sensations, along with his rumored wife, Patty Griffin. Here’s what he says about the band:

A few layout changes to world famous Hangout Music Fest were approved at yesterday’s council meeting, but one request denied.

Alterations approved for Hangout Fest grounds include a Viacom Broadcast Center with two pools in the beach area (MTV  and VH1); allowing simultaneous shows from 9 to 11 at night on the mainstage and the Boom Boom Room, with the Boom Boom staging turning to face Southwest instead of South for better sound quality. The BMI stage moves to the general admission area.

Hangout Festival Panorama

Organizer, underwriter, Shaul Zislin also requested something attendees keep asking for, access to the beach. Three areas were requested and the council would approve only one, near the artist compound, limited to only 100 people with three lifeguards.

About the proposed changes, Hangout Festival founder Shaul Zislin said:

Widespread Panic, Hangout Festival 2011

Widespread Panic, Hangout Festival 2011

“We need to absolutely take every opportunity to try to make this thing work for us. We said we’re in it for the long run. We’ve invested millions of dollars into this event to the benefit of the city, the community and ourselves, hopefully, in the long run. But right now the only ones waiting on the sidelines for the long run is us.”

Majestico

Majestico is playing the ZEW’s countdown to hangoutfest free concert series

Majestico was born from the breath of a new America, a land at the end of reason, where dogma meets God. At the beginning, he found himself living in a bungalow behind the local zoo. Amid the sounds of monkeys and elephants, he began recording what would be his first record “Boundary Conditions”. It was released into that great void they call the Inter-Net and although it remains undiscovered by the outside world, it was received with much excitement among peers.

Majestico then moved to Little Biv Town and made a bed in the studio there. Attempts were made at new recordings but the project was plagued with technical problems, personal disputes, and money was scarce. But late that summer, there was a breakthrough. A show was planned to be held in the studio so Majestico gathered a band to perform. That night people poured into the room as a cloud of steam formed above. While he played, they danced. This was all new to him, and although recording had been stunted, a new vision was realized. He just wanted to rock.

Marked by this new freedom, Majestico continued to write songs and play everywhere that was cool- bars, clubs, houses, warehouses…wherever. This brought him to the doorstep of producer Andrija Tokic and Bomb Shelter Studios, where his friends the Alabama Shakes had recorded their album. This time, recording was a sinch. The music fell onto the tape and the album “When Kingdom Come” materialized. A new saga has been formed in Nashville, Tennessee and the future has no bounds.Majestico ATO official

Editor’s Note: Majestico is currently surfing your airwaves. He’s cruising a tram ride on the milky-way highway searching for the key to life, He’s totally cool, laid back, and humble. He doesn’t believe in slaughtering wheat or vegetables just to eat them. That’s wrong, but if you disagree he respects your opinion because freedom is the price we pay to get to blow stuff up with hand grenades and bazookas.

Jack Wbite helps a kid sell candy in L.A.

Jack White’s instagram followers were probably a little confused recently when he posted a photo of himself sitting on a crate, selling candy with a kid on an L-A sidewalk, hashtagging the shot #fundraising.

He’s since explained to Rolling Stone that the picture was taken after he tried to “help break up a disagreement between two young salesmen staking a claim for the same spot.” Jack says he tried to get one to move down the block but the kid didn’t think he could sell candy there. White added, “Free business advice to youngsters is part of every American’s debt to society.” Read more at RollingStone.com.

Jack is no stranger to helping kids – his Third Man Records has a program that gives school choirs and bands a chance to record at his Nashville studios.

Pete Seeger, a seminal figure in American music who kept folk music alive and influenced generations of musicians died Monday of natural causes in New York, his grandson confirmed to The New York Times. Seeger was 94.
Musician Seeger performs with Springsteen, Morello, Rodriguez-Seeger, Baez, Matthews and Haynes during concert in New York

(pic courtesy of Reuters) Musician Pete Seeger (R) performs with (L to 3rd R) Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello, Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, Joan Baez, Dave Matthews and Warren Haynes during a concert celebrating Seeger’s 90th birthday in New York May 3, 2009.

As a solo performer, songwriter, interpreter, and member of the legendary folk band the Weavers, Seeger brought traditional and political songs to the mainstream over the course of his 70-year career. He wrote or co-wrote “If I Had a Hammer” (a hit for Peter, Paul and Mary) and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” (made famous by the Kingston Trio). The Byrds had a Number One hit with “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” which Seeger had adapted from the Book of Ecclesiastes and set to music. In Seeger hands, songs from Cuba (“Guantanamera”) and South Africa (“Wimoweh”) became beloved sing-along standards around the world, and “We Shall Overcome,” a traditional gospel song that Seeger heard early in his career, was a regular part of his repertoire and a staple of civil rights rallies for decades to come.

He also noted the influence of “North and West Africa” on the effort, adding they wanted it to be “more organic and human because the first record was so electronic and synthetic.” Stay up to date at FosterThePeople.com.

“For 25 years and 15 years respectively, we’ve had the honor and pleasure of playing, living, learning, and traveling with the Allman Brothers Band, one of the truly legendary rock and roll bands. We will be forever grateful for the opportunity and the experience, and for the love, enthusiasm, and support of the incredible fans. We are both preparing to dig even deeper into our various creative and musical endeavors and, as a result, 2014 will be our final year as part of the band. We are looking forward to seeing our loyal ABB fans at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta this Friday night January 10th and in March at the Beacon Theater in New York City as we celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the band.” – Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks

A statement from Derek Trucks:

“I got the call to join the Allman Brothers while on tour with my own band at the age of 19. It was out of the blue and felt surreal. I leapt at the chance. This was the music that I had cut my teeth on and it was the distinctive sound of Duane’s guitar that inspired me to pick up the instrument in the first place.

When I started with ABB I didn’t know how long it would last, only that I would let the music lead me and teach me. Amazingly that led me past the band’s 40th anniversary, to the band’s 45th, and now my 15th year as a member of this incredible band. Five years ago the 45th seemed like a lofty goal but I thought if we could make it to that milestone it would be a logical time to move on.

While I’ve shared many magical moments on stage with the Allman Brothers Band in the last decade plus, I feel that my solo project and the Tedeschi Trucks Band is where my future and creative energy lies. The Tedeschi Trucks Band tour schedule keeps growing, and I feel the time has finally come to focus on a single project, which will allow me to spend that rare time off the road with my family and children. It’s a difficult decision to make, and I don’t make it lightly.

I’m proud to have made a small contribution to the masterful music they have created over the past forty years, and will continue to create. Now seems like a good time to go out on a high note with a great 45th anniversary in 2014, and the mutual respect and friendship of the other 6 members of ABB.”

“I joined the Allman Brothers Band in 1989, at age 28, for a reunion tour with no promise or expectations of it going any further. Based on the success of the tour and the uncanny chemistry between the original members and the new members, we decided to continue and see where it all led. Now, here we are, 25 years later, and it has been an amazing experience. I’ve always said that if I were to join a band that I grew up listening to the ABB would be at the top of that list. The original version of the band was a huge influence on me and I’m sure that the countless hours I spent listening to and studying that music helped shape me as a musician. As proud as I am of being a member of such a legendary band, I’m even more proud of the music that we’ve made together and of being a part of carrying their original vision into the future.

As someone who’s been fortunate enough to juggle a lot of musical projects and opportunities I look forward to maintaining a vigorous schedule which will include many more years of touring and recording with Gov’t Mule in addition to my solo projects and to enjoying more family time as well. Being part of the ABB has opened a lot of doors for me and that’s something I don’t take for granted nor do I take for granted the friendship and musical relationships I have with each of the members. The 45th Anniversary of the ABB is a milestone amidst too many highlights to count and I’m looking forward to an amazing year creating music that only the Allman Brothers Band can create.”
