Grammy nominated New Zealander Lorde will bring her band for a 16-date tour in North America.

Lorde embarks on 16-date tour in America. Explains concept for new video ‘Team’

Lorde and her band will embark  on a 16-date tour across North America in March, starting in Austin, Texas, making stops New York City, Chicago, Boston to name a few and winding up on the west coast at the 2,800 capacity Fox Oakland Theater in California. See the dates and places below.

Lorde, also known as Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor, is becoming the youngest artist to write all of her own material and top the U.S Billboard charts 9 weeks in a row. The single also topped charts in 45 countries and sold  7.5 million copies across the globe.  Recently turning 17, she is officially the youngest artist to top the chart since 1987. ‘Royals’ recently set a new record for “Longest #1 at Alternative Radio by a Female Artist” with  seven weeks at the top.

A new video was recently released for the song ‘Team’. The concept was realized by Ella herself, as explained on her facebook and Twitter .

“(The video) was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was Queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger.”

South African anti-apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela, passed away today at the age of 95.  Read the freedom, peace loving leader’s obituary on the BBC here.
Nelson Mandela

South African leader, Nelson Mandela, passed away after months of intensive medical care for a lung infection.

Ironically, the first new music we’ve heard from U2 in a while, is a new song inspired by Mandela.  “Ordinary Love” was written for the soundtrack to the upcoming Mandela biopic, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. While a preview of the song came out in the movie’s trailer last month, you can hear the entire track in the band’s lyric video below. The lyrics are written in various places using stop-motion animation. Get more info –> U2.com. ·

Both U2 singer Bono and Nelson Mandela have done amazing things for Africa. Mandela, of course, led South Africa and ended apartheid, and Bono has helped the entire continent with his charitable campaign, Project Red.  “Ordinary Love” is the first new song from U2 in three years.  The song will come out on 10-inch vinyl on Record Store Day, November 29th. Only 10-thousand copies will be available and will be backed by a new version of their song “Breathe,” off their 2009 album No Line on the Horizon.

springsteen born to run lyrics According to Rolling Stone and the Associated Press, handwritten, working lyric sheet for Bruce Springsteen’s 1975 hit “Born to Run” sold for $197,000 today (12/5/13) at Sotheby’s.
It was in Bruce’s former manager, Mike Appel’s collection. Identities of seller or buyer were not revealed.
Most of the lines in this rough 1974 version, written in Long Branch, N.J., are apparently unpublished and unrecorded, but the manuscript does include “a nearly perfected chorus,” the auction house said.

Bruce Springsteen’s new album High Hopes has been set for January 14 release on Columbia Records. Title track video below.
Bruce Springsteen at Bonnaroo

Bruce Springsteen at Bonnaroo (Josh Rhinehart, Music Allies)

High Hopes finds Springsteen in a number of different musical settings, and includes the members of the E Street Band as well as guitarist Tom Morello and many additional players. The album was recorded in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia and New York City and marks Springsteen’s 18th studio album.

The High Hopes album packaging includes Springsteen’s own liner notes that detail the album’s evolution (full text of the liner notes is below).

Morello joined Springsteen and the E Street Band on tour in Australia in March, 2013 (sitting in for Steve Van Zandt), and became, as Springsteen says, “my muse, pushing the rest of this project to another level.” Besides his guitar playing on the album, Morello also duets with Springsteen on “The Ghost of Tom Joad.” Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011, and Danny Federici, who passed away in 2008, also appear on several songs of what Springsteen calls “some of our best unreleased material from the past decade.”

Here’s a link to the song and video for “High Hopes.” The video, directed by Thom Zimny, is a collage featuring photos from Danny Clinch, Australian tour footage shot by Chris Hilson and featuring Tom Morello, vintage documentary footage, text and graphics: http://brucespringsteen.net/.

Larger Numbers are expected for this year’s Thanksgiving meal.

Salvation ArmyMobile, AL (November, 2013) – The Salvation Army Coastal Alabama Area Command has seen a greater need for services which means there will be a greater need for those coming to spend their Thanksgiving at The Salvation Army on Dauphin Street. There have been several very generous supporters, like Hy-Grade Valve, donating 75 turkeys – however, in anticipation of larger than usual turn out we are looking for a few more as well as at least 50 hams.

Financial donations will also be accepted.

Last year, The Salvation Army served nearly 1,000 plates, and has been serving the community of coastal Alabama since 1899.

About The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in London in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. 82 cents of every dollar The Salvation Army spends is used to support those services in 5,000 communities nationwide. New Recycling Center being built in West Mobile should be open to public in three years.
Mobile AL Recycling Center

Ben Radcliff, contractor; Bradford Inge, president of Board of Goodwill Ester Seals; Connie Hudson, commissioner; Frank Harkins, exec. director of Goodwill Easter Seals; Bill Melton, Public Works Environmental Engineer for County; Cliff Barros (please check spelling), head of recycling center.

The Mobile County Commission and employees of Goodwill Easter Seals celebrated the ground-breaking of a $2.4 million recycling center in west Mobile at 10 a.m. Friday on the grounds of the old Brewer Center off Hitt Road.

The Mobile County Recycling Center will finally make it convenient for citizens in the fast-growing west side of the county to drop off typical residential recyclables. The center will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at peak operation, anticipated by the third year. An estimated 10 cars per hour will use the facility. Items will be all residential; no industrial products will be accepted.

“These will be clean materials that can be recycled to minimize landfill use,” said Commissioner Connie Hudson, who spearheaded the project by tapping a federal Coastal Impact Assistance Project (CIAP) grant. “Best of all, our citizens won’t waste time and gas driving to the other side of town to responsibly dispose of their recyclable materials.”

The 13,000 square-foot building on site will be insulated to minimize noise and landscaping will block the view of operations from the roadway. The facility is expected to be operational in nine months.

Goodwill Easter Seals will operate and manage the program at its own expense and expects that it will be self-sustaining eventually. The agency is a non-profit organization that provides programs and services to help individuals and families overcome challenges due to disabilities or other barriers.

Currently, 60 percent of materials that take up limited landfill space include the recyclables such as glass, electronics and most plastics. These items can be recycled, but commercial recyclers typically will not accept them because there is little to no return on their investment.

Ben M. Radcliff Contractor Inc. is the project builder; Driven Engineering Inc. is the architectural firm.

DNC releasing Volume 4 in their EP series, Songs for the Turntable’, in January. Meanwhile, the band jammed with R.E.M. recently and have a TV show in the works.
Drivin n Cryin

Georgia’s Drivin n Cryin to release new EP

“I don’t have the patience anymore for a two-year recording project, a big build-up, a tour and then reality again,” says Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ frontman Kevn Kinney. So the idea occurred to Kinney a couple of years ago: quit recording full-length albums. His band, together since 1985 and commended in 2011 by the Georgia General Assembly in an official house resolution, had taken 12 years off before issuing a full CD in 2009, but that was to be the last such release. “Most people that listen to records don’t usually listen past five or six songs,” Kinney figured, “so I’m going to make a record with only five or six songs on it.”

And so began a series of EPs—three so far since June 2012—with Songs For The Turntable soon to be number four. Recorded in Nashville and Memphis, Songs For The Turntable includes “Turn,” a prototypical DNC rocker that opens with a brief acoustic intro before giving way to a straight-ahead Replacements/mid-career Heartbreakers feel.

On a side note, Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ is working on a “super-secret TV project” for the FX Network that will air in early 2014.  The band recently played the 40 Watt Club in Athens where R.E.M.’s Peter Buck’s new project opening. And then, and then, an R.E.M. reunion broke out  (sans Michael Stipe).   Full Story

“Think of Will Kimbrough as the Sherlock Holmes of songwriting — a sharp-eyed observer of humanity who notes every detail and spares nothing in his analysis. His new case study is Sideshow Love (due February 18), a dozen songs that play out like a collection of smartly crafted short stories, laden with generous melodies and arrangements that balance virtuoso playing with just the right amount of space to let each of the characters within them breathe.”

Props to Thomas Carpenter of Mobile who got the right answer of the common link between the three songs. A lot of listener guesses today too.  In case you missed it and want to play, here are the songs:

  2. Bob Marley ‘Is this Love’

Happy Thanksgiving

The classic episode of WKRP in Cincinnati where a Thanksgiving promotion goes insanely awry. Just listening to Les Nessman’s vivid description is so funny (especially if you’ve ever worked in radio):

‘Turkeys are falling from the sky like sacks of wet cement,….. Oh the Humanity….  Not since the Hindenberg tragedy has there been anything like this’
‘As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.’ Mr. Carlson, GM
‘Less… We now work for a Rock & Roll station, which means these casually dressed people seem to think they’ve taken over the place’  Mr. Carlson

So many other great lines too.  Interesting observation that’s probably a coincidence, without the commercials, the live report starts at exactly 17:00 in the video. In real time it’s top of the hour, when traditional radio cuts to national or local newsbreak.  You usually hear a ‘cuetone’ that indicates it is exactly top of the hour.

And for Thanksgiving, 92ZEW is giving you a chance to win a $500 giftcard to Goldstein’s Fine Jewelers, along with other great prizes, including a cajun fried turkey from Creative Catering.  Click Here for Details.

Wet Willie featuring Jimmy Hall

Get more at WetWillieMusic.com

Southern Rock icons Wet Willie have been thrilling fans for more than 40 years with their potent mix of high energy R&B, downhome soul, blues and gospel harmonies. With powerhouse vocalist Jimmy Hall out front, the current line-up includes his brother Jack Hall on bass and harmonies, their sister Donna Hall Foster on backing vocals, long time member Ric Seymour on guitar and vocals, T.K. Lively on drums, keyboardist Bobby Mobley and electric/acoustic/steel guitarist Ricky Chancey. Wet Willie, originally from Mobile, Alabama, relocated to Macon, Georgia in 1969, where they were signed to Capricorn Records, and began a relentless recording and touring schedule. They broke into the national charts with their Southern Rock anthem “Keep On Smilin’” in 1974, with other hits to follow during the ’70′s, like “Streetcorner Serenade,” “Countryside of Life” and “Weekend” for Capricorn and Epic Records. Wet Willie continues to tour, currently in support of their most recent release Miles of Smiles on Atlanta’s Hittin’ the Note label.

Port City Rising II

port-city-risingWith the goal of highlighting Mobile’s indigenous musical talent, Catt Sirten and Eric Erdman created the first “Port City Rising” in 2011. Not just a singer/songwriter concert…”Port City Rising” was a platform for members of some of Mobile’s most successful bands, to strip down the music and focus on songwriting craftsmanship rather than showmanship. The sold out concert was seen by many as a high-point for the local music community. On November 6, 2013, “Port City Rising II” will continue to spotlight the artistry of our local music community. “Port City Rising II” will follow the same format as the original concert with local artists in-the-round, supported by an all-star backing band. Scheduled to be on stage are many of the players from the original event. Eric Erdman (lead singer of Ugli Stick), Josh Ewing (former front man for Top of the Orange), Ryan Balthrop (co-founder of Slow Moses), and Ross Newell (singer with Mulligan Brothers) will be joined by some new additions and backup singers featuring Donna Hall (Wet Willie).

Tickets for the Ribbon Cutting Gala concert will be available from local partners the Downtown Mobile Alliance, 92 Zew, Mobile Symphony Orchestra Box Office, and the Saenger Theatre Box Office, located at the Mobile Civic Center, 401 Civic Center Drive. Doors open at 6:30pm; show time is 7:30pm.

Ticket does not guarantee admission, as these seats are first come, first served.

Life by the Numbers
Here’s a great reason to listen to the radio. An hour of TV shortens your life by 22 minutes. Yes, we bet you never thought your TV could kill you but a recent study concludes that for every hour you watch, your life span is shortened by 22 minutes. That means gluing your eyes to the tube is about as dangerous as smoking or obesity, say the study scientists. “But while smoking rates are declining, watching TV is not,” says Lennert Veerman, a researcher in the Australian study. Of course, the real danger from TV is that it creates chubby, junk food snacking couch potatoes, whose only exercise is walking to the kitchen for more high fat treats or the bathroom. And experts agree that a sedentary lifestyle is linked to heart disease, obesity, diabetes and other health woes. The good news is that while watching TV for an hour knocks off 22 minutes of life, experts also say working out for 15 minutes a day adds on a whopping three years.

The Myth of Poisoned Halloween Candy
Every year it’s the same — parent’s biggest fear on Halloween is that their child will be given poisoned or drugged candy. Ironically those fears and the associated urban legends that go with them are completely unfounded. According to LiveScience.com, there are only two known cases of Halloween candy poisoning in America, and both involved relatives! In 1970, a boy died of a heroin overdose and investigators did find it on his candy. However, it was later discovered that in fact the boy had accidentally consumed some of his uncle’s heroin stash, and the family had sprinkled some on the candy to try and cover up the incident. The only other case on record happened in 1974 when young Timothy O’Bryan died after eating a Pixy Stix that had been laced with cyanide. Horrifically it had been laced BY HIS OWN FATHER who did it to collect insurance money. (Smithsonian Magazine)

Beck signed  with Capitol Records, who will release his first album of originals  since 2008′s universally acclaimed Modern Guilt in February 2014.

The new record, titled Morning Phase, has been described as a companion piece of sorts to Beck’s 2002 classic Sea Change. Featuring many of the same musicians who played on that record (who are also currently accompanying him live) —Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner — Morning Phase harkens back to the stunning harmonies, song craft and staggering emotional impact of that record, while surging forward with infectious optimism.

Morning Phase caps off a yearlong creative tear that traces back to the December 2012 release of the lavishly packaged and illustrated Song Reader featuring sheet music for 20 new original Beck songs. The project quickly took on a life of its own, with musicians from across the globe recording their own interpretations, as well as Beck’s own special shows featuring eclectic lists of co-conspirators putting their own stamp on the compositions. Following that, Beck re-imagined David Bowie’s classic “Sound + Vision” with a hand-selected 160-piece orchestra… culminating with a groundbreaking interactive 360-degree filming of a live performance of the track. More recently, this summer brought us three rabidly received singles released digitally and on 12-inch vinyl (“Defriended,” “I Won’t Be Long,” Gimme”), and September saw Beck custom-creating two performance pieces for Doug Aitken’s Station to Station series of transient happenings, all interspersed with his current run of live shows–touted by reviewers the world over as among the very best of his career.

Complete track listing, exact release date, and further information re: Morning Phase will be released as it is confirmed.

DIRECT HITS – The Album – November 11th, 2013 (Island Records) - Features tracks from The Killers’ Four Incredible Albums, Plus Two Brand New Songs. Produced by M83, Already One of the Most Anticipated Collaborations of the Year!

Ten years ago, on September 16th, 2003, four young men from Las Vegas left America for the first time to play their first ever London show, appearing fourth on the bill at Camden’s Dublin Castle. It was the first time they had played a gig outside of North America.

Fast forward to 2013, that band – The Killers – has gone on to sell over 20 million albums worldwide, headlined festivals across the globe, performed at The White House, and picked up myriad awards. Each of The Killers’ four studio albums has yielded some of the most amazing songs of the last decade, and, this summer, amidst various festival headlining shows all over the world, they reached a summit very few artists have ever managed: headlining Wembley Stadium to an ecstatic capacity crowd of 70,000. These shows – from their masterful showing headlining this year’s Lollapalooza to their crowning achievement commanding the stage at Wembley – reaffirmed what millions everywhere already know: The Killers have released some of the finest, most memorable, most loved songs of the last ten years, and they’re still going strong.

In celebration of their first decade together, The Killers will release Direct Hits on November 11th, 2013 on Island Records. A collection of singles from their four albums, plus two brand new songs, the album begins with the band’s breakthrough hit – and first song they wrote together – “Mr Brightside.” It follows the group from debut album Hot Fuss and its further singles, “Somebody Told Me,” “Smile Like You Mean It,” and “All These Things That I’ve Done,” through Sam’s Town’s “When You Were Young,” “Read My Mind,” and “For Reasons Unknown,” via Day & Age’s singles, including massive 2008 hit, “Human,” and last year’s stunning Battle Born album singles, kicking off with “Runaways.” A brace of brand new songs completes the set: “Shot At The Night” was recorded with M83’s Anthony Gonzales, and will be released as a single TOMORROW, September 17th via iTunes. The video for the song was directed by Robert Schober and was shot entirely in Las Vegas. “Just Another Girl,” meanwhile, was produced by long time Killers collaborator Stuart Price, who produced 2008’s Day & Age.

The Killers have also prepared a special Fan Deluxe Edition that will contain the Deluxe CD, a documentary DVD of The Killers career, as well as 5 10- inch vinyl records comprising all songs on Direct Hits.

The deluxe edition of Direct Hits will additionally feature the original demo of “Mr Brightside” and a new remix of “When You Were Young” by Calvin Harris, as well as Battle Born’s “Be Still.” Full tracklisting is as follows:killers

1. Mr Brightside

Women with More Makeup Don’t Look Trustworthy

A recent study published on PlosOne.org, says women who wear more makeup are viewed as untrustworthy, while less makeup made them appear competent.

Researchers presented adult men and women with pictures of women in various amounts of makeup (minimal, moderate, and dramatic), and they found that people were more likely to find women wearing more makeup “attractive and competent,” but gave them low scores in the “likeability and trustworthiness” category. The opposite was true for women who wore minimal makeup.

Hmm, do I want to look ‘attractive and competent’ or ‘likeable and trustworthy’?

Do ya think Hollywood’s portrayal of cosmetic heavy women, i.e., Melrose Place types,  affect  the outcome of this research?

Parents Think They’re Not Hip per Study

Four out of Ten parents believe they have passed the cool years and they’re out of touch with the younger generation says a new study released in conjunction with season premiere of Modern Family. It further says three out of ten parents spend time catching up with pop culture.

Here are the top five reasons parents think they are uncool according to the study:

1. Not knowing what is number one on the charts .

2. Not being able to work an iPhone .

3. Not knowing the words to current songs .

4. Their sense of fashion .

5. Owning a sensible car .

Looking at it another way, Six out of Ten parents believe they’re still rockin’ it, and Seven out of Ten don’t bother with the whole pop culture gimicks (oop, did I say that outloud?).
