Robert Plant says he’d like Zeppelin tracks sung by John Paul Jones included in remasters.

Robert-PlantLed Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page is working hard at remastering the band’s catalog and while he recently told Rolling Stone that there aren’t many unreleased songs, there are lots of unused alternate takes on tracks. Meanwhile, singer Robert Plant revealed to BBC Radio that he really wants to include some tunes he found that bassist John Paul Jones sings lead on. However, Jones isn’t too keen on that idea. Plant explained, “[John’s] going to give me two cars and a greenhouse not to get ‘em on the album.”

Jones co-wrote Zep songs like “No Quarter,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” “In the Light,” “Trampled Underfoot,” “All of My Love” and “Fool in the Rain.”

No word yet on when the remastered records will be out.

Singer Robert Plant said creating songs was one of his favorite things to do with the band ,  “ I think making the records was really great. I mean, nevermind the gigs but just actually reaching a point where you write and record together, where you’re there together forever at this particular period in time, and you develop, on the spot, from little snippets of vocal bits and stuff you’ve written in a book and from the imagination of the musicians. So it’s that giving birth is what’s the cool thing.”

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has some choice words for Gene Simmons and his vitriolic statements about Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse

Seems the flappy tongued one said in an interview with Team Rock Radio that neither Kurt Cobain nor Amy Winehouse should be considered musical icons as they did not produce enough music. Hawkins disagrees and told TMZ the rock legend was an ‘idiot’ for saying such a thing (surprising Hawkins didn’t call him an old fart!). Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have been silent so far about the comments.

So, do you agree with the Kiss icon or Hawkins?

Bob Dylan’s latest project, an art exhibit showcasing his recent iron sculptures, will open this November at the Halcyon Gallery in London, the BBC reports.

“I’ve been around iron all my life, ever since I was a kid,” Dylan said. “I was born and raised in iron ore country – where you could breathe it and smell it every day. And I’ve always worked with it in one form or another.”

Titled “Mood Swings,” the exhibit will open at Halcyon – which previously housed a collection of sketches and drawings by the singer and songwriter – on November 16th and run through January 25th, 2014. A wide array of Dylan’s recent metal works will be on display, but in particular the exhibit will showcase seven gates made from vintage iron and scrap metal and decorated with objects including wrenches and meat grinders to a treble clef and guitar.

“Gates appeal to me because of the negative space they allow,” Dylan said. “They can be closed but at the same time they allow the seasons and breezes to enter and flow. They can shut you out or shut you in. And in some ways there is no difference.”

“Mood Swings” will also include other welded works and a new collection of silkscreen paintings. Every piece in the exhibit will be up for sale, too. “His iron works demonstrate his boundless creativity and talent,” said Paul Green, president of the Halcyon Gallery. “As these artworks are made at home, not on the road, they give us a rare glimpse into another part of the artist’s own personal universe.”

The ironworks exhibit will come on the heels of another fruitful non-musical endeavor for Dylan: The National Portrait Gallery in London recently dedicated a new exhibition to Dylan’s portrait paintings called “Bob Dylan: Face Value.” The museum said his works “represent characters, with an amalgamation of features Dylan has collected from life, memory and his imagination and fashioned into people, some real and some fictitious.”

vacation-catMumford and Sons announce they’re going on hiatus for “the foreseeable future.”

Keyboard player Ben Lovett told Rolling Stone that now that they have wrapped up all of their touring commitments for their latest album, Babel, they’re looking forward to some much needed R&R.

So what does one of the biggest bands in the world plan to do with all that time off? Well according to Lovett, “Were just going to rest up. I dont think weve had actually much time in the process to be with other people and living a life outside of the band. I think thats whats in place at the moment, to do very little – especially when it comes to Mumford & Sons.” It sounds like some downtime for the group is just what the doctor ordered as the GRAMMY-winning performers seemed to be going stir crazy on the road. The band was recently ejected from a strip club in Atlanta, Georgia for their unruly behavior.

delbertmcclinton12-x600Delbert McClinton and Jimmy Hall and Friends are performing at the Dauphin Island Seagrass Series September 21st, 2013. More details Here.

“Music’s always been a dominant force for me.”

Delbert McClinton’s been doing the blues for quite a many years. Playing behind some of the original players like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Sonny Boy Williams while he was in the Straitjackets. Delbert says he ‘was in the right place at the right time, that’s where and when and what I learned, and still do” He says he loves all kinds of music including music from the 30′s and 40′s, the swing music and that stuff. It that just warms him and takes him back to his childhood, growing up in the 40′s with war music. “Music’s always been a dominant thing for me.”

Delbert McClinton The Beatles

Delbert McClinton with the Beatles, before they were big stars. Lennon learned about harmonica playing from Delbert.

Delbert relayed a childhood memory from Armistice day: “I had a wonderful childhood, but we didn’t have any money, but I didn’t know that, I didn’t care. I remember Armistice Day when everyone was so excited about the end of the war. I was sitting on the porch with my grandmother and a soldier came by, stopped, took off his tie and gave it to me and kept walking. At that time my Dad was in a military hospital because he broke his back. Momma and I went to Louisiana to the military base. People were in tents, armed guards everywhere and German prisoners of war. I was just a kid, didn’t really know what was going on, but it was exciting and the memory still stays.”

One of Delbert’s recent releases ‘Acquired Taste’ does have that upbeat, positive swinging influence. He reunited with his songwriting partner of the 70′s, Glen Clark, to record the latest album. It took about ten days to record and mix the record in California, but it just did not sound right. So they all went to Mexico for a week to write some more, returned to the studio and recorded the album in two days.

Delbert says he always enjoyed writing with Glen, swapping ideas and learning more about songwriting. One of the big things he learned is “not to be afraid to be humbled.” His lyrics are more on the upbeat positive side because he hates sad endings and songs without hope.

seagrass-concert series september 21Tim and Delbert joked about the folks that have “too much stuff,” Delbert described some of the things he has that aren’t needed, like old hotel keys, enough ‘to build a three room house’.

The 72 year old life-long musician says he’s now at the age where he doesn’t make music to try to impress anyone, he just does it for the love of music.

Hear more about Delbert’s songwriting process, working with Glenn and his roots in the blues in the above player.

Music History

In 1964…The Beatles were in a bomb scare as a phone call said there was an explosive on their flight to Dallas. It turned out to be a false alarm.
In 1967…The Beatles shot the striptease scene for The Magical Mystery Tour.
In 1970…Jimi Hendrix was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Mary Abbot’s Hospital in London at the age of 27 after choking on his own vomit. Hendrix left the jimi hendrixmessage ‘I need help bad man’, on his managers answer phone earlier that night. Rumors and conspiracy theories grew up around Hendrix’s death. Eric Burdon claimed Jimi had committed suicide, but that’s contradicted by reports that he was in a good frame of mind. In 2009, a former Animals roadie published a book claiming that Jimi’s manager had admitted to him that he arranged the murder of Hendrix, since the guitarist wanted out of his contract.
In 1971…Pink Floyd became the first rock group to play the Classical Music Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. They performed “Atom Heart Mother.”
In 1972…In London, the Rock at the Oval festival kicked off. Headliners were The Who, but the bill was filled out by Mott the Hoople and The Faces, whose Kenny Jones would years later sub for the deceased Keith Moon on drums.
In 1974…John Lennon was the guest DJ on New York’s WNEW-FM.
In 1976…At Don Kirshner’s Rock Music Awards, Fleetwood Mac won Best Group and Best Album for Fleetwood Mac. Peter Frampton was awarded Rock Personality of the Year.
In 1976…Boston released their debut single “More Than a Feeling.” It would later go to number five.
In 1980…Amsterdam’s Paradise Club was the setting for a two-day festival celebrating the life of Jimi Hendrix. The 11-hundred attendees watched Hendrix films and an appearance by The Noel Redding Band, with Mitch Mitchell sitting in on drums.
In 1983…Kiss unmasked on MTV. The band appeared on the channel for the first time without their makeup.
In 1997…The Rolling Stones played Chicago’s Double Door Club as a warm-up for their Bridges to Babylon tour. The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan was in the audience, but he paid the seven-dollar admission along with the other 400 lucky attendees.

Mobile Saenger Theatre Chandelier

One of the many captivating fixtures inside Saenger Theatre.

After several attempts, Mobile City Council finally approved the only proposal submitted for management and booking of the Saenger Theatre. Mayor-Elect Sandy Stimpson appeared before the Council this week to voice his support for the Huka Entertainment/SMG management proposition. Thereafter, the council unaminously passed the agreed upon contract for the two entities to take care of the Saenger for three years. The holdouts last week were John Williams, Bess Rich, and Gina Gregory.

Mild-mannered band Mumford and Sons reportedly go to sing karaoke after a gig, get bounced out. Apparently performing an entire concert still wasn’t enough.

Mumford & SonsWho would have guessed that the members of the mild-mannered folk band Mumford and Sons were a group of beer drinkers and hell-raisers? TMZ reports the English quartet visited the world famous Clermont Lounge strip club in Atlanta, Georgia Thursday night, just hours after playing a gig. Apparently it was karaoke night at the gentlemen’s club and band member Ben Lovett decided to belt out a few tunes while his bandmates whipped out their cell phones to capture their performance. The strip club’s owners politely asked the musicians to stop filming, to which they purportedly responded to by continuing to film and cussing out the clubs staff. The boys were then quickly ejected from the club. So far calls to the band’s rep’s have gone unanswered.

Sometimes you run across websites that just don’t seem to look right, or your web browser is cruising the internet superhighway in 2nd gear.
There are some quick fixes you can try to get your cruise back into 5th gear.

Upon taking on the task of website maintenance a couple years ago, I dived in deep and studied many aspects of web design (as much as time would allow anyway). Along the way I learned a few things that cause websites not to work well on some computers, so I thought I’d share some tips, especially since I noticed even our website looks weird on some computers.

1. If you use MS explorer, dump it and get Chrome or Firefox. Why? Developers abhor Explorer because Microsoft refuses to ‘play nice’ in the quickly changing world of webdesign. Some protocols have been established by a World Wide Web Consortium that make design coding consistent across all browsers. Unfortunately, some of those codes will not work in Explorer. MS insists on using their own codes that haven’t yet reached the level of design currently available.  I’m not sure about Opera or other browsers as I’ve not used them. And sometimes it could just be a website coded erroneously.

2. Always keep your browser up-to-date. An older browser lacks some capabilities of newer scripts, like java and jquery. Fun experimental sites won’t work at all (like the new Arcade Fire ‘Reflektor‘ interactive hologram site). Once again, limiting your enjoyment.

3. Clean the ‘cache’ often. It holds a lot of data from every site you visited. Also important because some websites may have changed since you last visited, cleaning the cache will bring up the most recent version.

Clean cache in Chrome by going to ‘Tools’ then ‘Clear Browsing Data’. In Firefox open ‘History’ on menu, then ‘Clear Recent History’. In both instances you’ll be given several choices: clear cookies, history, etc. If you don’t need the history, clear that too. Cookies can be deleted, but it will log you out of any sites that you’ve logged into.

4. Hover your mouse over elements, pictures, etc. Many times a little note pops up telling you what it is and what you can do with it.

So there you go, four simple things to make surfing much better.   Next time, things you didn’t know your smart phone could do.

Mobile City Council will once again address and possibly vote on the proposed management and booking bid from Huka Entertainment and SMG Venue Management.Mobile Saenger Theatre Chandelier

Well three city council meetings and several presentations, the only bidders for Saenger Mgmt contract, Huka and SMG, were denied. City Council voted down 4-3, despite the  supporters from the entertainment industry who appeared to voice their opinion. Bobby Bostwick, President Mobile Symphony Orchestra, President Friends of the Saenger Theatre, AJ Niland, Sam Voispa and Tim Camp are some of the folks that spoke on behalf of keeping the Saenger alive.

Council members who denied were Gina Gregory, Bess Rich, and John Williams.

The Saenger will apparently be shut down October 1 if no decision made pursuant to the City’s agreement to manage only until October 1. The decision was made following the CLA’s  unpopular move in a new direction, including the termination of the staff at the time. The CLA ultimately resigned as managers.

After the CLA resigned from running the theatre in December, the City Council issued a 16 page public notice for bidding on a contract to maintain the Saenger while bringing in culturally diverse performances. Only three entities expressed interest, RSA, SMG and Huka. RSA never submitted an official proposal as required by the City.  Huka and SMG agreed to work together and proposed as such. Several City Council members also feel it is in the best interest of Mobilians and the City’s reputation.

The City’s requests for bids on the management of the Saenger with precise details of responsibilities, included a deadline for submitting a full proposal as May 31 at 5pm. Accordingly, the parties with proposals would do their presentations, investigations would be made etc etc.  August 8 was originally cited as the day to award the project. However, that award has still not been announced, despite the fact only two proposals were submitted, Huka and SMG. The vote was continually tabled.

Click here to read the full 16 page contract announcement from City..

At the September 9 Cultural Committee meeting, SMG and Huka Reps presented the financial projected profit and loss statement along with their duties as managers, projecting more a possible loss as they rebuild relations in the concert industry.  Gains are projected to increase more every year.

saenger-front-cmartmozzyThe financial offer is booking and promoting a variety of shows.:  If a show loses money, Huka/SMG will absorb the financial loss.  Of every show that makes money, the city will receive 75% of the profit, with the remaining 25% going to Huka/SMG. The only financial request is to maintain the agreement Mobile with the CLA, an annual fee of $200,000 (which was cited as the average figure paid to CLA for maintenance).

Huka has ten shows already lined up for the remainder of 2013, however, cannot proceed and will lose those possibilities if a decision is not made at the Sept. 10 meeting. They also have at least 64 in the works for 2014.

ArcadeFire-grammy2Finally, we can hear a song from the highly anticipated new album from Canadian Grammy Winners Arcade Fire, via two different videos.

It’s the title-track from their upcoming album ‘Reflektor’ and features David Bowie on vocals with LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy producing. The band rolled out not one, but two different videos for the song today. The regular video, directed by Anton Corbijn, is black and white filmed with a mirror man and the band with big ol’ paper mache heads.
The other is yet another Google Chrome experimental interactive video produced by Vincent Morriset.  Enhanced for smartphone and tablet use, the video uses your camera to incorporate you in the video, which you can also control. It should also work on a regular computer. Check it out at justareflektor.com.

With echoes of Bob Dylan, Oasis and Don McLean in his soulful voice, Brit sensation Bugg recorded his sophomore effort in Malibu with  producing guru Rick Rubin.

Matt Groening, take a bow: Jake Bugg, 19, says a musical lightning bolt struck him at age 12 while watching an episode of The Simpsons at his working class home in the north of England. “I heard this Don McLean song, Vincent (Starry Starry Night), and I just couldn’t understand why I liked it and that intrigued me,” Bugg says in a thick Nottinghamshire accent. “That’s the wonderful thing about music, sometimes you can’t work it out. From then on, I knew this was the only thing I wanted to do.”

Jake Bugg ("Lightning Bolt")

Jake Bugg (“Lightning Bolt”)

Loving the road: Currently zipping around the globe in support of his critically praised debut album, Jake Bugg, the singing guitarist says that while hitting the road “can be knackering, how on earth can you complain? You get to see the world.” He is stunned that his first collection of songs about growing up “in this totally specific part of England, you know, hanging out with me mates and things like that, has connected with so many people around the world. It amazes me.”

Don’t call him Bobby Jr.: Critics like to compare some of Bugg’s music, particularly the more sparse, acoustically driven songs such as the single Lightning Bolt, to the work of Bob Dylan. Bugg shrugs it off. “Don’t get me wrong, Dylan’s great, but he’s not the only person out there inspiring me,” he says, quickly adding McLean, Donovan and Oasis to the mix. “(Noel and Liam Gallagher’s) music came out when I was born, but it’s had a big impact on me,” says Bugg, acknowledging that he, like Oasis, considers the Beatles a formative force. Asked what current music he likes, Bugg goes silent. “Not a lot, though I’d like to find something,” he says, searching for an answer. “I like the new Black Sabbath album. And if you think about it, if I hear something cool and it’s from 1925, it may not be new music but it’s new to me.”

The Malibu life: When not gigging, Bugg is holed up with mega-producer Rick Rubin in his Shangri-La recording studio in Malibu, where Dylan and the Band once did their thing. The second Bugg album won’t be a surf music disc, but it will “naturally reflect my surroundings there,” he says, laughing. “I mean, I’m not smoking and drinking out on the street this time.” He calls the hideaway an “inspiring spot,” and Rubin a “chilled-out guy” whose talents cause Bugg to park his natural defensiveness about his work. “Rick communicates simply and effectively,” he says. “He’ll say something like, ‘Why don’t you repeat that line on the chorus?’ And I’ll go, why didn’t I think of that?”

Bugg and One Direction: The British press has made hay of Bugg’s withering comments in interviews about his pop star countrymen (he called the group “terrible” in one interview). Bugg is quick to douse the flames. “Look, it’s nothing against them personally, I’m sure they’re really nice folks, but that style is not for me,” he says. “They’re five good lads, and someone writes the songs and they sing them. That’s just not for me. Maybe I’m cynical, but I appreciate anyone who writes and plays their own music.”

Jake Bugg

Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank Of England, has compared the UK economy to Jake Bugg (‘Lightning Bolt’).

Carney, who recently took on the position at the head of the bank, was speaking in Bugg’s hometown of Nottingham when he made the comparison with the singer-songwriter.

Speaking at an address of business leaders at the University of Nottingham, Carney said: “The UK is no more productive than it was back in 2005. And to put it in context, that was before Nottingham’s own Jake Bugg got his first guitar and since then, as you know, he’s had a Number One record and a string of very successful gigs. He’s become a lot more productive, and the critical question is how much more, and how quickly can productivity improve across the broader economy.”

Meanwhile, Bugg recently revealed that he could release his second studio album later this year. The teenager claimed in a recent interview that he had nearly finished recording the LP and that he was hopeful he could release it by the end of 2013.

Saenger Theater92ZEW has learned the fate of the Saenger Theatre management will lay in two entities’ hands rather than just one,  Huka Entertainment and SMG Venue Management.  Approval of the planned partnership is expected to pass City Council vote during tomorrow’s meeting.  The plan is for Huka to book the entertainment at the Saenger, while SMG (current Mobile Civic Center mgmt) will manage the operations. Voisin said the company is not involved in building maintenance and construction in either facility.

In an interview with 92ZEW today, SMG Regional General Manager Sam Voisin said the goal together is to to take the historic theater “back to its original lustre again, bringing economic impact and foot traffic back to downtown.”  AJ Nyland, CEO of Huka Entertainment, told us his plans are to bring shows that cater to different walks of life throughout the city, as he did prior to the CLA take-over and staff change.

Willie Sugarcapps live at Callaghans (Michelle Carol Stancil, Southern Rambler)Like an old live oak tree, the numerous roots of Willie Sugarcapps run far, deep and wide, yet are all connected to one source, coastal Alabama.
Edited August 21, 2013

Be sure to check out the brilliant confectionary combination live at  92ZEW’s special CD Release FREE SHOW, Live Simulcast, Tues. August 20 at the Soul Kitchen.

August 20 is the official release date for the highly anticipated debut CD of Willie Sugarcapps, a group of stellar players individually, who’ve come together during a sort of homecoming and created a piece of work worthy of longevity with authentic slices of life and sounds from their respective hometowns on coastal Alabama.

Willie Sugarcapps cd release show at Soul Kitchen with  92ZEW

Willie Sugarcapps cd release show at Soul Kitchen with 92ZEW

The band consists of some southern Alabama favorites, former Mobilian, now Nashvillian Will Kimbrough (who’s collaborated with Jimmy Buffett and Emylou Harris among others), Grayson Capps (full music credit in the John Travolta film ‘Love Song for Bobby Long’), Sugarcane Jane’s Anthony Crawford (Neil Young guitarist and well-known songwriter), and his partner Savannah Crawford, with that sweet magnolia voice and the highly sought after jazz/blues/rock guitarist Corky Hughes.

They came together at the rural haven, the Frog Pond at Blue Moon Farm (inspired by Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble, where musicians of different backgrounds and genres are invited to perform together, noodle with new sounds, and just jam for music’s sake).   Each member takes on more than one role, leadsinger, songwriter, mandolin, violin, and guitar players that create a delicious pot of gumbo any chef would be proud of (or a box of chocolates). The fine production skills of Grammy Award winner Trina Shoemaker (whose credits include Queens of the Stone Age and Sheryl Crow) along with Willy Sugarcapps impeccably make the album come alive with spicy undertones and baritones complimenting the lyrics, creating a vivid imagery that pulls the listener in. . with , letting the stories and their emotions shine through.

Each one carries their weight in songwriting and playing, yet the combined talent and experience form an instant pinnacle that soars higher than the simple stacking of their parts.

Americana Rock with some footstomping sing-a-longs and gentle tales of family, love. and life on the road, their debut record intertwines the deep south with the ebbs and flows, we all know, sometimes somber, other times gloriously happy, just like life. From the jigging sounds of Mr. Lee, who turns 93 today, to the pending doom of trouble rolling around the bend like a long passenger train screaming into the station. Southern places and southern troubles come to life as you feel the slow unending current of the river flow over you in “Mud Bottom” or drink the poison of the BP oil spill in “Poison” (Capps re-worked his NOLA romper with tongue in cheek reflections of the after-effects of the spill.)  On stage the energy of this quintet is not to be denied.

Definitely a must-see and a must-listen. Many congratulatory props to those who brought this brilliant project together.

Based out of Fort Worth, Texas, the Unlikely Candidates are an indie rock band initially formed as an acoustic duo by childhood friends Kyle Morris and Cole Ale in 2008. Eventually expanding the lineup to include guitarist Josiah Maughan, bassist Brent Carney, and drummer Kevin Goddard, the band was also able to expand its sound in bigger, more sweeping directions. In 2013 the band signed on with major label Atlantic Records, which released the Unlikely Candidates’ debut album in the summer of 2013.

The video is dedicated to Dragons fan Tyler Robinson  who died at the age of 17 after a battle with cancer.

civil-warsThe Civil Wars’ highly anticipated sophomore self-titled album will be released August 6 on Sensibility Music/Columbia Records. This is the follow up to the three-time Grammy Award-winning duo’s acclaimed debut, Barton Hollow, which is now certified RIAA Gold in the U.S.
The Civil Wars Featuring “The One That Got Away” and “Dust To Dust”
The duo is still on ‘hiatus’, which was announced last year due to irreconcilable differences. Joy Williams told the Associated Press “John Paul and I aren’t speaking right now but to me that doesn’t determine the outcome of the band because if we’re not speaking we can’t determine the outcome of the band at this moment, so the other elephant in the room is what’s happening with the band? The reality is I’m not even quite sure.” John Paul refused to comment.

Not that that’s the only back-up plan, the band also has it’s own record label and live music promotion team (which undoubtedly would go along well with their own liquor brand).
