Wet Willie with Jimmy Hall, Port City Rising II to Play Free Show at Saenger Theatre for 'Ribbon Cutting Gala'

Special Ribbon Cutting Gala to celebrate new beginnings for the historic downtown venue will include announcements of confirmed artists slated to perform at the Saenger, followed by a free show with Wet Willie and Port City Rising II.

Saenger Theatre's Fate Still Not Decided; Once Again on Council Agenda (updated)

Huka/SMG proposal to run Saenger is on the table again. Huka says they already have at least ten performances ready to finalize for the remainder of 2013, and at least 64 so far for next year. Those possibilities could be lost if the City does not take action as soon as possible. The Saenger will be shut down October 1 if no decision made pursuant to the City’s agreement to finance it for one year.

Pace Picks Up to Stop Canadian Tar Sand Projects in Mobile

Tarsands are already shipping through metro Mobile’s residential neighborhoods and downtown business area, with plans to eventually increase to more than 120 carloads of tar sand oil per day. That translates to more than 2 million gallons of oil entering the city every day. The danger to the community far outweighs any potential benefit.

Mobile Bay Sierra Club Hosting Tar Sands Action Meeting

A series of permits have been granted in 2011/2012 that could make Mobile a key U.S. delivery point of Canadian tarsand oil for export to Asia and Europe, including the expansion of the Asphalt Company’s storage facility to hold millions of gallons along the Mobile River and beneath the watershed that supplies drinking water for the City of Mobile.

Road Closure Next Week West Mobile/Wilmer Area

Mobile County Commission tells us the western railroad crossing at Wilson Road and Cemetery Road in Wilmer will be closed from 7 a.m., on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, to 5 p.m., on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. The closure is due to the replacement of tracks by Canadian National Railroad. Motorists are asked to be cautious and to take alternate routes. Detour signs will be posted.
