Dave Grohl Says "There Might Be a Season Two" of "Sonic Highways"

Dave Grohl Says “There Might Be a Season Two” of “Sonic Highways”

Image Courtesy of Roswell Records/RCA RecordsThe finale of Foo Fighters:Sonic Highways airs tonight, but luckily for fans of the eight-part Foo Fighters documentary, it may not be the series finale.

“There might be a season two,” Dave Grohl told Jon Stewart during his guest appearance on The Daily Show on Wednesday.

Sonic Highways followed the Foos across America as the band recorded their new album, also titled Sonic Highways, in different studios all over the country. In the midst of documenting the band’s recording process, the series also profiled the music history of each city the band visited. After hitting Chicago, Washington, D.C., Nashville, Austin, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Seattle, tonight’s Sonic Highways episode will focus on New York City.

The Sonic Highways album was released in November and reached the number two spot on the Billboard 200.

Foo Fighters will be celebrating the Sonic Highways finale with an intimate show at New York City’s Irving Plaza. The band’s full-scale North American tour begins next year on July 4 in Washington, D.C. The tour will wrap up October 7 in Memphis, Tennessee. All ticket info can be found on FooFighters.com.

UK Study Says Depeche Mode Writes Most Sophisticated Lyrics, Led Zeppelin Writes Least Sophisticated

UK Study Says Depeche Mode Writes Most Sophisticated Lyrics, Led Zeppelin Writes Least Sophisticated

Image Courtesy of Press Here Publicity Depeche Mode is probably known more for their explosive synth-pop sound than their witty lyricism, but a study conducted by British tabloid The Mirror concludes the band writes the most sophisticated lyrics of all the U.K. bands that they surveyed.

Reportedly using algorithms designed to measure the difficulty of school textbooks, the study found that it requires 10.3 years of education in order to understand an average song written by the 80’s electronic group — the highest of all the bands surveyed. Legendary singer Elton John notched the second-highest sophistication rating: his lyrics require 9.3 years of education to fully understand.

On the other side of the spectrum, the study wasn’t too kind to Led Zeppelin. Their old blues lyrics, euphemisms for sex and references to mythical beings were deemed the least sophisticated of all the bands studied, notching an average readability score of only 4.4. They shouldn’t feel too band, though — The Beatles are also listed as one of the 10 bands with the least sophisticated lyrics, with an average readability score of 5.7.

Modern rock bands aren’t immune from the Mirror‘s study, either — both Coldplay and The XX were among the bottom 10 on the sophistication scale, receiving readability scores of 6.9 and 6.7, respectively.

If these results seem fishy to you, it’s probably worth noting that Def Leppard, who wrote the song “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” appear as one of the 10 bands with the most sophisticated lyrics, requiring 8.5 years of education to understand an average song. If you’ve always argued that Def Leppard writes more sophisticated lyrics than the Beatles, you’ve finally been vindicated.

Coldplay Recording New, Possibly "Final" Album

Coldplay Recording New, Possibly “Final” Album

Image Courtesy of Anton CorbjinColdplay may have just come out with Ghost Stories, their sixth album, earlier this year, but according to Chris Martin, the band is already working on a new record — which could be the band’s last.

“We’re making an album called A Head Full of Dreams,” the Coldplay frontman told BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe on Thursday, also noting that A Head Full of Dreams might be Coldplay’s “final” album, even comparing it to the conclusion of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

“It’s our seventh thing, and the way we look at it, it’s like the last Harry Potter book or something like that,” he said. “Not to say that there might not be another thing one day, but this is the completion of something.”

“I have to think of it as the final thing we’re doing. Otherwise we wouldn’t put everything into it,” Martin continued. He then announced that Coldplay would be going on tour after A Head Full of Dreams is released.

You can listen to Martin talk about A Head Full of Dreams via the BBC Radio 1 Soundcloud page.

Soundgarden Documentary in the Works, Band Asks Fans for Help

Soundgarden Documentary in the Works, Band Asks Fans for Help

Image Courtesy of Mike LavineA week after HBO revealed plans for its forthcoming Kurt Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck, fellow grunge pioneers Soundgarden have announced that they too will be the subjects of an upcoming feature documentary. In order to make the film, the band is asking fans to submit any Soundgarden memorabilia that they may have collected over the years.

“As we dig deep into our vaults, we ask that you, the fans, dig into yours,” reads a statement on Soundgarden’s website. “Personal photographs, bootleg video and audio, collected concert posters — your rare piece of music history could be the missing piece we need.”

The band then asks fans to send a description of what they’ve got to info@bangerfilms.com with the subject line “Soundgarden Fan Submission.”

Metallica recently asked fans for the same favor as the band puts together their reissues of Kill ‘Em All and Ride the Lightning.

Soundgarden’s latest release, Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path, is similarly retrospective — the three-disc compilation collects the band’s rare and unreleased songs and covers.

Former Slipknot Drum Tech Reveals Identities of New Band Members

Former Slipknot Drum Tech Reveals Identities of New Band Members

Image Courtesy Universal Music Group DistributionThough most Slipknot fans have already figured out the identities of the band’s new drummer and bassist, we now have an Instagram post to prove it. Former Slipknot drum tech Norm Costa posted a photo of his personal itinerary on his Instagram profile, which lists all the members of the band, including drummer Jay Weinberg and bassist Alessandro Venturella.

Costa, who has worked as a drum tech for Slayer, was hired by Slipknot but was then let go. Given his use of the hashtags #blowitup and #f**kSlipknot, the working relationship appears to not have ended well.

Venturella, a former guitar tech for Mastodon, was more-or-less confirmed as the new Slipknot bassist when fans spotted his distinctive hand tattoos in the “The Devil in I” video.

Weinberg, son of Bruce Springteen‘s E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg, has also been long-rumored as a new Slipknot member. The younger Weinberg used to be the drummer for Against Me!, but he left on less than amicable terms — frontwoman Laura Jane Grace tweeted “Dear Slipknot, good luck with that. #s**tbag”

Venturella and Weinberg were brought in to replace Joey Jordison — who was asked to leave the band last December — and the late Paul Gray, respectively. The new members played their first show with Slipknot during the band’s KnotFest performance in October.

Exhibit Showcasing Coldplay's "Ghost Stories" Album Artwork Opens

Exhibit Showcasing Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories” Album Artwork Opens

Image Courtesy of Parlophone RecordsMila Fürstová, the artist behind the artwork on Coldplay‘s Ghost Stories, is showcasing her designs for the band’s 2014 album in a London art gallery. All proceeds from the sale of the artwork will go to British youth charity Kids Company.

“Sometimes a piece of art looks exactly like you think your song sounds,” says Chris Martin in a statement. “On Ghost Stories, Mila somehow managed this time and time again. Her etchings showed exactly what we were trying to say.”

Martin and Coldplay were in attendance for the private opening of the gallery Wednesday. Located at 17 Osborn St in London’s Shoreditch district, the gallery’s now open to the public through December 7.

Coldplay seems to be in a particularly artful mood of late, having just released a colorful, interactive video for “Ink,” from Ghost Stories. The track also appears on the band’s latest release, the live CD/DVD Ghost Stories Live 2014.

"Kurt Cobain: Montage" of Heck Director Says Courtney Love "Never Asked for Any Editorial Involvement"

“Kurt Cobain: Montage” of Heck Director Says Courtney Love “Never Asked for Any Editorial Involvement”

Image Courtesy of Universal Music Group – Anton CorbijnBrett Morgen, the director of the upcoming Kurt Cobain documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, has clarified the remarks he made to The Hollywood Reporter regarding Courtney Love‘s involvement in the film. She wasn’t, as some may have concluded, barred from participating.

“[Love] never asked for any editorial involvement,” Morgen tells Rolling Stone. “In today’s age, and particularly when making a film on a public figure, it is virtually unheard of to grant this kind of access to a filmmaker. And for that I will always be grateful. Any suggestion that Courtney was denied editorial involvement couldn’t be further from the truth. It was her idea to let me have control.”

In the original THR article, Morgen says, “At a certain point, I started working more closely with [Frances Bean],” referring of course to Cobain and Love’s daughter. “We [all] agreed that because Courtney was a subject in the film, it would be best if she wasn’t given editorial control.”

Frances Bean is an executive producer on Montage of Heck. Morgen adds that Love “hasn’t seen the movie” and says he’s “not sure she’s intending to.”

“This film would not exist today without the support of Courtney Love, Frances Bean Cobain and [Cobain’s mother] Wendy O’Connor,” Morgen continues in his statement to Rolling Stone. “The trust that has been invested in me by Courtney, Frances, and Kurt’s immediate family has been crucial in allowing me to paint a portrait of Kurt that is both honest, unflinching, empathetic, and effecting. I look forward to sharing this film with audiences around the world in 2015.”

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, followed by television and big-screen releases in 2015.

Watch Linkin Park Perform “Final Masquerade” for “Guitar Center Sessions”

Image Courtesy of Brandon CoxLinkin Park took a more intimate approach to their live show in order to film an episode of Guitar Center Sessions. The band played the 2,000-person capacity Wiltern in Los Angeles for the guitar mega-retailer’s concert and interview series. Linkin Park’s Guitar Center Sessions episode will air on DIRECTV’s Audience Network December 5, but in the meantime, you can watch the band performance of “Final Masquerade” from that Wiltern show via Billboard.

“It’s been so long since we played [The Wiltern] it’s like we never played here,” guitarist Brad Delson tells Billboard. “I find that when we’re on a small stage we start regressing to the like, banter and nonsense that we haven’t done for years.”

“Final Masquerade” comes from Linkin Park’s latest full-length release, The Hunting Party. Despite reaching number three on the Billboard 200, The Hunting Party is actually is the band’s lowest-charting album on the 200, as all five of their previous albums peaked at number one or two.

Linkin Park will return to their arena-sized performances with a tour in support of The Hunting Party, which begins on January 15 in Orlando, Florida. The tour will wrap up in Canada on Valentine’s Day, February 14, in Edmonton, Alberta.

My Morning Jacket Prepping Two New Albums

My Morning Jacket Prepping Two New Albums

Image Courtesy of Danny ClinchGet ready for a double dose of the Jacket: Jim James has announced that My Morning Jacket will be releasing two new albums over the next two years. The first record will be released in April, and the second is due out in 2016.

“I just had tons of songs this time,” the MMJ frontman tells Rolling Stone. “We didn’t even get to all of them.”

The band eventually whittled the list down to 24 tracks, which they’ll split up into two standalone albums.

“I love making each record sound different,” James says. “I love the thrill of putting on a record and feeling like you got the wrong one from the factory. We strive to make people put on the record or MP3 and be like, ‘S**t, did they actually f**k up my order?'”

James also reveals that he’s been working on a follow-up to his solo debut, 2013’s Regions of Light and Sound of God. He’s aiming for a 2016 release for his sophomore solo effort.

“The whole Jacket thing is so much about us playing together and creating this circle of power,” James says. “The solo record is more of a patchwork. It’s like one person sitting there making a quilt as opposed to five people building a house at the same time.”

The two forthcoming MMJ records will be the band’s seventh and eighth studio albums. Their latest release was 2011’s Circuital, which notched the band a number-five debut on the Billboard 200 — their highest spot on the chart.
