3rd Annual Charity Run For The Battleship

(Mobile, AL) October 29, 2012 – On Saturday, November 10, 2012, at 8:00 am, a 5K Run/Walk will be held at USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park. The 5K Run/Walk will begin at Battleship Park, go East on the Causeway into Spanish Fort and then loop back to end at Battleship Park. The course is an out and back certified 5K.

Registration forms by mail (entries should be postmarked by November 3, 2012) or they can be picked up/dropped off at McCoy Outdoor or Run-N-Tri in Mobile or Running Wild in Fairhope until noon on Thursday, November 8, 2012 or online (www.Active.com) until midnight Thursday, November 8, 2012. Race day registration at the Battleship will be from 7:00 am – 8:00 am. Race begins at 8:00 am. Food, beverages, and awards will be provided after the race.

5K Run/Walk Pre-registered:
Adults $15 Children (16 and under) $12
5K Run/Walk Day of Race:
Adults $20 Children (16 and under) $15
All pre-registered K-12 students: $5 without tee shirt

In 1964, schoolchildren and businesses across Alabama raised close to a million dollars to bring the Battleship USS ALABAMA home to the state for which she is named and to her permanent home on Mobile Bay. The crew of the USS ALABAMA served bravely during WWII in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters earning nine battle stars. She was unfortunately one of the many ships destined to be scrapped by the Navy. But, thanks to the generosity of those schoolchildren and businesses, the USS ALABAMA was saved from the scrap heap and opened to the public on January 9, 1965, ready to share her fascinating stories of courage and stand as a proud tribute to all Alabama and American veterans. The battleship remains open today, sixty five years since she was decommissioned by the Navy.
In recent years, the valiant warship has been damaged by the constant winds and water and is in need of repairs and restoration. “There is no doubt the citizens of the state will rise to the occasion again. They have always been there with their support for the Battleship and Battleship Memorial Park. They brought the ship home, and they have funded its operations through donations and ticket purchases ever since. No city, county or state funds have ever been used for the daily operations of the Park” said Bill Tunnell, Executive Director of USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park.
