The Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament (July 14th, 2012) has added a Special Red Snapper category to reflect the recent extension of the Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper Season. No points will be awarded in this category toward the Master Angler award.

The 54th Annual Tournament, sponsored by Exxon-Mobil, is Saturday, July 14th. The weigh station will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with the tournament beginning at 5:00 a.m. Open to all anglers 15 years old and younger. Every angler that weighs in a fish gets a Zeigler hot dog, a bag of Golden Flake potato chips, an ice cold Coca Cola, and a Blue Bell ice cream. The proceeds benefit annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Tour (sponsored by the Mobile Jaycees).
The awards ceremony for the Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament will be held immediately following the tournament at the ADSFR site.
The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo recently announced that a limited number of Red Snapper tags would be issued for the 79th Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. Only 200 tags were available and selected on a lottery basis. The 200 anglers that were selected will be contacted by Rodeo officials. While Red Snapper will not be a category in the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, a random drawing for $500 will be held for all anglers with a special Rodeo Red Snapper tag who enter a red snapper at the 79th Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.
Anglers who receive a Special Red Snapper Tag will be required to pick the tag up at the July 19th Liar’s Contest starting at 6pm. Proof of purchase of an ADSFR Rodeo ticket and a valid ID must be provided to claim a Red Snapper Tag. The Liar’s Contest will be held at 630pm followed by live music with Ryan Balthrop and Friends.
The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo has announced species changes for the 79th Tournament. Red Snapper and Grey Triggerfish will be closed to recreational fishing during the tournament and will be replaced by Lane Snapper and Gag Grouper. For a second year the Amberjack category will be replaced by Swordfish.
Other changes include the consolidation of the Recreational and Open divisions into one King mackerel Jackpot with a ticket price of $200. The Paradise Marine/Scout Boats King Mackerel Jackpot pays cash for 1st through 10th place with a 1st place prize of $10,000 based on 125 entries. 2nd through 10th place payouts are based on the number of entries. There will be a drawing among all anglers who enter a fish in the King jackpot for a Scout Boats 177 SPORT with a Yamaha motor and Loadmaster trailer. The top 23’ & under boat will receive a Raymarine A57D 5.7” Chartplotter/ Fishfinder with US Coast Guard charts.
The dates of the 79th Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo have been set for July 20-22, 2012. The weigh station will be open from 10:00am – 7:00pm Friday and Saturday, and from 10:00am – 5:00pm Sunday. Fishing begins at 5:00am Friday, July 20th with a ceremonial cannon blast and concludes at 5:00pm Sunday, July 22nd with a ceremonial cannon blast. The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo typically attracts over 3,100 anglers competing in 30 categories for nearly $400,000 in cash and prizes. The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo currently holds the Guinness World Records title for the World’s largest fishing tournament. In the last 10 years the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo has funded more than $150,000 in Marine Science scholarships at the University of South Alabama from tournament proceeds.
The Awards Ceremony for the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo will be held on Monday, July 23rd at the Aircraft Pavilion at Battleship Memorial Park starting at 6:00pm.
The festivities for the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo will kick-off at the Rodeo site with the Coors Light Liar’s Contest on Thursday, July 19th at 6:30PM. Rodeo ticket holders can participate in the competition by telling their best, or worst, fish tale. A “distinguished” panel of invited judges will determine the winners. Live music will follow the Liar’s contest.

There is a MANDATORY Captain’s Meeting and Sign-Out for all boats entered in the Raymarine/Team Simco Big Game Jackpot and the Paradise Marine/Scout Boats King Mackerel Jackpot. The meeting and sign-out will be at the ADSFR site on Thursday July 14th @ 5:00 p.m.
