In an ironic twist of fate, a couple researchers in California found a possible cure for aggressive cancers and it’s a non-toxic chemical found only in cannabis (aka marijuana, mary jane, pot).

The scientists at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco found that a compound derived from marijuana could stop metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer.

Molecular biologist Pierre Desprez spent decades studying ID-1, the gene that causes cancer to spread. Fellow researcher, Sean McAllister, was studying Cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-toxic chemical compound found in cannabis.

Together, they discovered that combining  the gene with the compound actually “turns off” the ID-1 gene. Yep, it forced the cancerous cells to stop spreading and return to normal. They found it works in many types of aggressive cancers, including brain, prostate and others.

So what does this mean for medicinal marijuana?  It won’t be as simple as lighting up a doobie!  Apparently smoking it could never produce enough CBD to be effective, so they are looking to test injections and pills. Their theory’s already been tested in labs and on animals. They are awaiting the green light to do trials on humans.
