Son of A Sailor Fest Takes Over Cathedral Square for Year Two

Jaret Bates – MOBILE, AL

The Son of a Sailor Fest took over the streets of Downtown Mobile on Sept. 20 for a second straight year.

The Event to honor the life and legacy of Jimmy Buffett and celebrate the Parrothead lifestyle featured live music and even a second-line memorial to the late Buffett.

Buffett’s sister, Lucy, a famed restaurateur made an appearance at this year’s festival.

The Event was presented by corporate partner BuildSubmarines.com and was to benefit the Dauphin Island Sea Lab which is a leader in conservation and marine protection on the Gulf Coast.

Emceed by 92Zew Hosts Gene Murrell and Matt McCoy it was a day full of great food, fun, drinks, and island-inspired music. A day and gathering of people that would make Jimmy Buffett smile.

The free musical line up included, The Blow House Brass Band, Ryan Balthrop & Slide Bayou, Daria & the Hip Drops, Will Kimbrough and members of the Corral Reefer Band, and special Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band Jammy Buffett.

With Year two in the books event organizers look forward to the future. Last week, it was announced that Mobile would be adding an exhibit and statue to honor the head of the Parrothead Army on its beautiful waterfront. It is planned for the debut of the exhibit to coincide with the 2026 edition of Son of a Sailor Fest in Downtown Mobile.

Here’s a look at last year’s second line, and this years was even bigger, from our good friend Ron Reems.
