The Mobile Symphony Orchestra will open its new season with a vibrant concert celebrating the connection between music and visual art on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 11, at 2:30 p.m. at the Saenger Theatre.
Titled around the visual power of music, the concert will feature a collection of works inspired by art, colorful imagery and the excitement of Mardi Gras.
“Three vivid musical canvases launch the Mobile Symphony’s season with spectacular colors, as we celebrate the connection between the visual and musical arts,” Music Director Scott Speck said.
The program includes Hector Berlioz’s depiction of a wild Mardi Gras celebration during the lifetime of Renaissance sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, along with a contemporary work by former Mobile Symphony Composer-in-Residence Kenji Bunch inspired by the Pop art paintings of Roy Lichtenstein.
The concert will also feature Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. The piece brings to life the whimsical, fantastical and sometimes monstrous creations of artist Viktor Hartmann.
Together, the works showcase the orchestra’s ability to bring visual imagery to life through music.
“These works highlight the power of music to paint pictures with the limitless palette of the modern symphony orchestra,” Speck said.
